I am looking for the hard straight truth (if that is possible haha) from you Coach D and staff about the problem ND has with being a middle of the road football program performance wise.
Now my opinion/thought is it has to do with COACHING. I am a huge BK fan and I am happy he is at ND but I am questioning if he is a good enough coach to get ND to the playoffs and consistently to the New Year Day bowls. My reasons behind this thought is that when you are the Head Coach for a major program it is your job to hire good assistants who help develop these players and you adopt your philosophy with the players you have. So far ND has done a pretty average job in those categories.
Since I have been on this board I did not realize how much posters care about "high star players" and question every offer that is out to a 3 star or lower. Heck if the guy was trash but had a 4 star in front of his name I bet majority on this board would be happy. ND has gotten its fair share of elite prospects/very good prospects (The proof is in the overall rankings in the past 10 years and ND ranks in the top 10 and no worse than the top 15) yet ND is an average football team.
So when I do a checklist of what a program needs to have in order to be successful; which in my opinion is contending for a Major Bowl every year ND checks all the boxes except for coaching and that goes all the way down to the assistant coaches as well. (Elite Talent, Elite Academics, Elite Exposure, Elite Fan Base, Elite Coaching???) not even close in my opinion.
Thoughts?
