Way over rated. He is a below average play caller benefiting from a lot of talent. Kelly should have hired a proven winner with more experience. Ian Book- i'm not impressed. I cant wait until Wimbush and Williams come back.

smart enough to recognize running is the strength

Why are you dialing up a playaction vert route from the one yard line????

Long is limited by the lack of zip on our passing attack. I started typing this as BOok lobbed up that int.

We had good offensive production today. Almost 500 yards. 2 100 yard rushers with 350 total rushing yards. 33 points and easily could have been 40. All this with a QB who was playing his 1st game except for a quarter of prior experience.

That is good. Some of his play calls have me scratching my head. I agree with the announcer that playing tempo in the 4th quarter was odd. We should have been burning the clock.

341 rushing yards. Enough said. Long and Kelly are trying to get Book to do other things to beat the better teams like opening up the playbook on an overmatched team instead of handing it off all game. We will need him again this season. The passing game needs work to keep better teams honest. Wide receivers are dropping a lot of passes no matter who is in at QB. They need to step up as well.

I disagree. The game was not in doubt. Run your offense. Your QB needs all the reps he can get.

Book was fine. Did you see the QB’s in the UM/MSU game? Book was Johnny U compared to them!

Long wasn't calling the game yesterday, no way. This had BK written all over it. A "throwing" QB. A back-up QB. No doubt BK was more active in the play calling with the excuse that we were playing a back-up.

Funny stuff

Thought the only really bad call was the QB sneak on fourth and two. Otherwise, the game was too important for Book’s experience to simply milk the clock. Not trying to score at the very end used to be normal courteous behavior, but in today’s world where the playoff committee seems to over value large victory margins, I was pleasantly surprised.

Agree that dropping 40 would have been better than 33 but, ND had its shots all game. Holding UNC to 10 took ND's average opponent score to a little over 16 ppg.

Not impressed with Long. His play calling not much better than the so called offensive guru bk. Love Elko though, he is the real deal.

Clueless post.

ND threw it 25 times in the first half with a back-up QB on the road. We ran it 18 times in the first half. 7 of which were the back-up QB. Does that resemble anything we've seen from Long this year? Does it resemble what we've seen when BK was calling plays?

Is it possible for some people on this board to NOT live up to the stereotype of arrogant douchebag Notre Dame fan? Jesus H, we treat other ND fans like this. Unbelievable.

FYI, the 25 attempts in the FIRST HALF by Book was more than the entire games for Wimbush against our last 3 opponents and only 5 less than the entire game against Temple. Georgia is the only game we threw that much and guess why? Because we couldn't run. Did we look like we were struggling to run last night?

Book is a better passer than Wimbush. ND three the ball more than usual for 3 reasons.

1. Book is a passer. He doesn't run the ball nearly as well as Wimbush. You have to consider how many called passes became runs with Wimbush at QB because he tucked the ball and took off. He does that at least 5 times every game, which skews the pass / run numbers. Counts as a run, but was a called pass.

2. North Carolina's two best run defenders were their excellent safeties, who have been awesome at coming down I to the box all year. Neither is great in coverage, however. UNC had 8 players in the box the entire first half, with a safety rotating down. You have to be able to pass against those looks if you are going to win against good teams. At times you'll crease a run constantly planned and out leveraged by two players in those looks, but in 2017, when you see cover 1, you have to be able to pass.

3. ND's pass catchers need to develop. ND needs to keep developing its offense to beat USC, Miami, Stanford and NC State. You get better by practicing it.
