Today I celebrate the anniversary of my birth about 100 years ago, or so it seems. I celebrate about fifty five years since I received my first football helmet, gold in color and without chinstrap or facemask .It was designed to be used with no facemask, I don't know what happened to the chinstrap![smile]But I digress! I celebrate all those years and memories of Irish football, great, good, mediocre, bad, and unwatchable! The last being somewhat rare thankfully. Today I celebrate the fine young men who have decided to cast their lot with The Fighting Irish and sign to represent Our Lady in the public domain of the most exciting sport there is![yes only my opinion] I look forward to watching them develop as players, teammates, scholars, and citizens. I hope to continue this practice for a long time , the good Lord willing! I will take nothing but joy from this day. So please celebrate with me and as always GO IRISH!!!!

Well it wasn't a NEW helmet when I got it ! To answer your question at the age of eight with the Wellesley Ma. Tornados of the Pop Warner "c" team! That would be very early 1960's. I owned my first helmet earlier but '61 was my first organized tackle participation.
