Brey's Best Year Recruiting?

I read a post that pointed out Zona was #1, ND #2 and SC #3 in BB recruiting this year. With the recent FBI activities, I suspect Zona and SC could lose some recruits. That would make ND #1 in basketball recruiting. Add Durham to that (I am really confused on why he is not considered part of the class) and I think we have a legitimate argument that we have the best class to date.

Who else has a class of 5 newcomers that good? None are one and dones.

Great news. Nice to have a 6'11 guy. Where are we in 2018? Are we finished? Or how about a one-or-two-and-done player, a top ten recruit, just to lead us to the dance for once?!

I see that we offered Simisola Shittu -- we don't usually offer top ten-guys because they don't plan to stay in college, am I right there?

That said, I like Brey's model and what he's done with ND basketball lately.

Dont forget Farell and Colson are rated the top point guard and forward tandem in the country.

I think ND is done. Brey had as many as 7 scholarships to use, but in the winter he said he wanted to use no more than 5 of them. 4 recruits + Durham gives you 5 guys. Brey talked about how he finds it difficult to coach and keep 15 guys happy. For him, 12 is right around the perfect number.

That is pretty stunning. Neither was highly rated. That is an incredible testament to Brey's ability to develop talent.

Is this even a question? We're #2 in recruiting right now and that doesn't even count Durham. Recruits are finally recognizing.

That's how a lot of coaches think. 12 gives him a starting 5, 4 backups, 1-2 role players, and 1-2 developmental players. Here's the math I was shown by an assitant D1 coach as to why it makes sense to stay below that 15 limit:

You only have 200 total minutes to allocate in a game between the entire team. If a coach is giving his starting lineup 30 minutes each, there goes 150 of the minutes. The coach now has 50 minutes of game time to split between the remaining players. Usually the next 2 strongest players are getting about 15 minutes each, which lowers the remaining minutes to 20. If you're running 7, you give 7 to each of the next two backups, and allocate the remaining 6 minutes to the role and developmental players if the game allows for that. If not, spread them out over the top 4 backups.

The minutes can fluctuate, but as long as everyone knows their role, they're satisfied. If you go to 15, that's 3 more players you have to carve out minutes for. It's better to sit on the scholarships or to offer them up to high level walk ons that can help in practice, but don't expect to play.

Brey is doing a great job and he runs a clean program! I bet a part of him is enjoying the FBI investigation that took down 10 second Ricky P.
