Body by Balis

The Coney picture is nuts - looks like a two year difference. Almost looks too big for football and more like a body builder.

That was my initial reaction on the Coney pic but I'll "trust the process" and wait on the results on the field before making judgement. I saw the original link posted on the ND Bleacher Report page and they mentioned Stepherson increasing his vertical by 11 inches...if true that is insane!

A DB is going to have a load with Kevin this fall. You can look at the players and see the transformation after a couple of months. These young men are motivated this year to set the record straight. I hope for them the best of luck.

And his legs are just as small from the before (at least from the pic angle). Remember Brandon Hancock (fullback) from SC back in the day? Guy was bodybuilder big but ALWAYS hurt.

Stepherson is never going to have massive legs. He's 180lbs, up about 12lbs from a year ago when he checked in at 168lbs. Those burners have lean frames and don't often have those thighs that rub. The biggest he'll probably ever be is maybe 190lbs while preparing for the draft. Most of that weight will be added to his lower body over time, but he's always going to have that Will Fuller / TJ Jones / Marvin Harrison build, IMO.

Ontario....I was referring to Tevon. His lower legs (calves in particular) are very undeveloped compared to his upper body.

Two months! That is incredible for both. Reminds me of the days of steroids. I hope they strike a good balance of strength and flexibility. Go Irish!

I'm not saying anything nefarious is going on but this is more than 2 months. You can't transform that much in 8 weeks.

Some of this is illusion created by the camera lens. Look at the size of the shower tile in the Coney pictures, and you'll notice they appear bigger in the after pic. No question the guys are hitting the weights with a passion and the competition contributes to this, but think the degree of change is exaggerated by the camera lens.

It is pretty tough to do so. It is easy to gain that much weight in 8 weeks but not all muscle.

It just makes me think they weren't being pushed enough before so they see immediate gains at first. Future gains will probably come more slowly.

Hate to say it, but if I was a betting man I'd put money on Coney being on juice. Looks like a mini Ronnie Coleman

A significant drop in body fat % will make you LOOK like you made bigger gains than you actually did. I would suggest that is a part of what happened.

Plus the "before" pics were after the team had several weeks off between the USC game and the arrival of the new coaching staff.

With S&C, I'll believe it when I see it in the 4th quarter and in November/December.

Stephenson dropped fat and put on about 10 pounds so I don't think it's just the fat loss bodybuilding illusion. Coney clearly grew. But who knows what that looks like on the field

Not naturally.
Yes you can naturally.....with the right workouts, nutrition, genetics and dedication it's completely possible. You are forgetting that these are D1 athletes aka freaks....I am not trying to be disrespectful but anyone that played D1 athletics is a complete anomaly to the high school football/sports population. I was completely stunned by the guys I played with and what they could do in the weight room. Almost seemed super human but it's damn near impossible to beat a NCAA drug test when they watch u pull it out and pee in the test tube

-Out of all the high school football players in America lesss than 1% get to play college D1 football
-Out of that 1% only .04% make a NFL roster for 1 year

Those were numbers that I was given my first fall practice 20 years ago by my head coach.

Welcome to the age of sport science. People have been asking for this for years and now it's at ND.

Does everyone not realize that they arent flexing in the first picture and they are in the 2nd? just look at their hands. also bringing your shoulders more forward in the second pic is going to make your shoulders and overall physique look broader.

Valid points Go but I'm a bit more shocked/impressed by Stepherson's 11in vertical leap gain. As a former college baseball player, I wasn't so much worried about my leap so I'm curious as to those that know more on this. It's great for high pointing balls thrown his way but he must have been weighed down by sandbags on his original jumps

Very true. Another point to consider is that players don't lift very much during the season, so they will nearly always look more built after their winter conditioning sessions than after 14 weeks of game prep.

I noticed that, something seems off about that. like he had a bad initial jump or something. Doesn't he have a bad hammy this Spring, so maybe he didnt have much explosion when initial testing happened?

Would not be at all shocked if the first picture was taken before any kind of workout and the second picture was taken immediately post an intense workout where the players still had their "pump". Still impressive gains, but as a fairly avid lifter, I can tell you I look a hell of a lot more jacked up post workout than I do crawling my butt out of bed in the morning.

A combination of hard work, a great program by Balis, substantial supplementation, an emphasis on leaning out, post workout "pump" and a different zoom on the camera is likely the formula for the massive transformation.

Regardless if it's a tad misleading, mentally, it has the players believing and that's all that really matters. "What you believe, you can achieve". If Balis' program is something the players believe in, that consistently challenges them and is something they are willing to put 110% of their effort into, the results will come and that will translate to confidence, which a is key ingredient to winning.

the vertical jump doesn't surprise me. i don't know what methods they use but will tell you strength shoes work at increasing your vert. i used them in h.s. and then once in my late twenties when i had a group of friends that liked to play basketball. don't know what my gain was in h.s. but in my late twenties i could dunk and decided to wear the strength shoes again. used them 2-3 times a week for 2 months and gained an easy 8 inches on my vert. i always tell every kid i meet that they should use them if they play basketball.

These guys knew they were doing before and after photos. So yes they flexed in the after. That being said the program that is in place is crazy better than we have had. Results will be great.

Strength programs are fun to talk about but the proofs in the pudding. Initial reports are great. When the Irish step on the field with GA, we will see how ND matches up physically. Hopefully what we've been hearing and what we think we are seeing is accurate. Our achilles heel is still the appearance of lack of overall talent and depth across the front four on the DL.

If you're looking past the opener that's a big mistake IMO.

Ditto Georgia
Don't think he's looking past Temple, but just assuming Georgia will have big, strong guys (as most SEC teams do). And also assuming that Temple will be over-matched by the Irish in the S&C category.
