Did any of you watch that last night? What really struck me was Singletary asking Buddy Ryan to reduce the defensive play book. He said it was cut in half. Then Singletary said the defense took off. If a Hall of Fame players at the pro level need a smaller play book then college kids need simplicity.

I did see that and the conclusion you have reached seems to be a logical one. Although I would point out that times do change and we don't know how complex Buddy's playbook was to start with. Just a thought.

That was a great show. The Bears were the best team in the history of football. It's a shame they only won one Super Bowl as they dominated their opponents like no team ever had or has.

'85 Bears have a legitimate claim to be one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history, the offense and the team as a whole, maybe not so much. Just an opinion.

I like the part about how they had to dumb down the defensive playbook by 2/3rds to get the players to play at the highest level.

They only once, in part, because they were not the greatest team in football history. The QB was not close to a great QB for his career so they did not have much of chance.

The 1960s Packers, the 1970s Steelers, 1980s 49ers all have a better claim to being more dominant teams over a longer period. The Bears' legacy does not live up to their fans' hype.

^^^^^. You're nuts!

No single team in history dominated like the 85 Bears. I am not talking about a dynasty team, I am talking about one year and no team was ever better or more dominant.

However , not undefeated! that singular honor still belongs to the '72 Dolphins!

Here is the BVG defense problem. He is trying to combine a whole slew of schemes. Dom capers/dick lebeau , rex Ryan, etc.
He calls more zone blitzing than any other college team. The thing is college is not the NFL. No matter how good a college offense is they still are amateurs and in no way close to nfl teams. Moreover it takes so much time to know all those assignments on any given snap. Something the collegiate athlete doesn't have. Pros can study the game plan all week. The student HAS to study physics all week and only practice a small amount.

Let me say one thing here about a positive on BVG.
The Georgia tech game he kept it simple. Somebody echoed repeatedly during the week to Drue Tranquil run support run support. They made that offense look anemic just by good hard nosed fundamental football.

I'm sorry but while the bears were very impressive I don't believe they were the greatest of all time. Had the patriots not got hot at the perfect time and play spoiler....the whole world wanted to see the Marino/bear defense rematch.
They killed everyone but Marino and that release gave them fits. It also would have been Marino second super bowl and chance to win the big one.

No real argument here from me. By the way it was good to have Tranquil and Martini play the option the way it is supposed to be played.

Not only that by judging by comments from other teams who played GT after us, we gave a pretty good blueprint. I think it was a defensive lineman from North Carolina who said that they saw how ND basically lined up and smacked GT in the mouth and that's how they played them..........

1985 Bears were a great team but Miami defended its title as the only undefeated team. The 18-1 Patriots or the Jimmy Johnson Cowboys vs the 1985 Bears would be a great matchup

As much as I didn't like them, the 78 Steelers were maulers on both sides of the ball. I would love to see them play the Dolphins , Bears , Cowboys or Patriots

Most comments by players/coaches are empty. They're meaningless air fillers. Saying that one team smacked another in the mouth doesn't mean anything other than that they likely won the game.

I'm far from a Kelly hater, but I don't think they played well against GT or all that well against Navy. GT had a TD come off the board thanks to an apparent phantom hold and their offensive line played poorly (lots of missed assignments). Several unforced errors from their QB too -- a fumble to start the 2nd half and a poor pitch in the redzone. GT just played like crap, and I would be saying the same thing even if the game finished 30-7 instead of 30-22.

I don't think what ND is doing on defense is completely sound vs option teams, but the coaches are getting better.

The 89/90 49ers would have given them problems too.

Considering they see the option so limited...how reckless and poor at times they play other offenses..against Tech and Navy they played pretty good assignment football. Tech had two swing pass plays that ND had ZERO converage on but from the option point of view they played well all things considered.

Can they ever come up with those big stops against elite teams and make some game changing plays? So far under Kelly one year...2012 it just all clicked for the defense.
Imo some was the material and some was running just a simple 3-4.

"Unforced errors often are caused by prior hits and pressure. The disruption is what derailed the Jackets and Middies. This was also deployed in the past on one occasion by Coach Diaco to dismantle Navy.I can't recall the year.

When you watch teams like GT and Navy, watch to see how often the QB takes a good shot. Its not often at all. Certainly not when pitching the ball.

Also, it was mostly the offensive line that had unforced errors. Missed assignments by the offensive tackles on the playside backer.

Agreed , however I would maintain that it was the attacking defense that caused those missed assignments and blocking errors.

I wouldn't. The defense didn't "attack" --play QB aggressively or blitz, which I'm glad because, IMO, its the better way to defend that style of offense. They were using the same basic principles, for the most part, that are used to defend any offense.

On the base play that option teams run, the playside tackle is going to block the playside backer. If he's not there, the OL is going to go the safety usually. GT's playside tackle would often think the playside backer wasn't a threat to make the play and would go to the safety, except the backer would come outside and make the play. That happened numerous times throughout the game. It had nothing to do with what ND was doing well (I'd say they were doing something poorly on these plays -- the blocker shouldn't have been able to get to the playside backer if it was properly defended)
