While no doubt there is more love and support for the football team I truly believe winning a basketball championship this year would have been more special. My whole life (Now 21) growing up I was told ND would never win a championship in basketball. I was told they would never even come close. There was too much stacked against ND from grades to recruits to facilities. On the other hand football always got its recruits and always had its fans. The football team was expected to win.
The basketball team on the other hand, I felt as if they were the underdog in every big game. Yet they still won most of their big games. They came within 2 points of beating one of the most stacked teams in the history of the sport. What hurts the most was they were truly good enough to win a championship. This basketball team was special and caused nearly every single Notre Dame football fan to convert. Everybody was rooting for ND because of what they stood for.
Unfortunately unlike football I dont know when they will get another chance to be this good. However Id like to thank this team. They gave me hope. Hope that one day ND will be able to bring home a championship in basketball. If that day comes I promise you it will feel better than any football championship. The reason being... It will be unexpected, and thats truly what makes something special.
