BAS: No. 14 Irish improve to 23-8 with a 12-2 win over Purdue Fort Wayne.

Liam Simon and three relievers combined on a four-hitter with 17 combined strikeouts as No. 14 Notre Dame rolled past visiting Purdue Fort Wayne Wednesday, 12-2, Wednesday in a non-conference college baseball game at Frank Eck Stadium.

Simon (1-0) picked up the victory with four innings of two-hit ball. He struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter. Jack Findlay followed with three hitless innings, with Radek Birkholz and Matt Lazzaro finishing up.

Jack Zyzka’s solo home run in the bottom of the third gave the Irish (23-8) the lead for good, at 2-1. He was one of four ND players with two RBIs, joined by Nick Juaire, Ryan Cole and David LaManna.

Cole also homered for Notre Dame. LaManna was 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 10-24.

The Irish begin a three-game ACC weekend series with Wake Forest (28-9, 10-8) Friday at 5 p.m. EDT. Admission is free.

One game separates Atlantic Division-leading Louisville (9-6) and the fifth-place Irish (8-7) in the division standings, with NC State (10-7), Wake Forest (10-8) and Florida State (10-8) all jammed in between.
