The ND crowd is going wild after Tyler Buchner hits Chris Tyree for a TD pass. ND has all the MOJO going for itself and it is time to put Toledo on ice and move onto Purdue. Then Coach Freeman, with an 8 point lead, calls "The Corner Blitz" on the very fist play on Toledo's next drive.

They blitzed Cam Hart earlier off the boundary and he made a nice tackle for loss. It worked once, why not call it again? The issue is in a corner blitz everyone has to fit perfectly into their gaps for it to work. Florida State ran the counter play into the boundary for a huge run and TD, and Toledo calls the counter into the boundary for a huge run here to drastically change all the momentum in this game.

When you watch this corner blitz you will see that ND ends up with three defenders...yes three...all in the same gap. Having called many of these corner blitzes in games before, the corner is taught to attack up field shoulder of the QB as he is the outside contain player. The defensive line is taught to slant hard into the next gap towards the ball. When you watch this play you will see Hart attack up field, but #9 Justin Ademilola is also outside as he never slanted down. Of course we do not know how it is taught, but Justin should have been slanting inside and wrong arming (meaning coming under the puller) to take away the inside running lane for the RB.

On top of these two players outside the gap, JD Bertrand fits outside of the second puller, giving the ND defense three guys all in one gap. The RB is free to pick multiple holes to run through. This is three guys all playing for the first time as starters (Justin is a major player as we know on the 2 deep) and this is easily fixable with more and more reps in practice and film study.

Out of all of the plays I watched, graded, and took notes on this one play really stuck out to me. Was the return on investment, and risk associated with so many moving parts that take place during a corner blitz worth the price when you finally have taken over this game?
