The ACC leaders will come into the 2016 season ranked very high (Clemson may well be ranked #1). Because of this even with a loss the ACC leader will likely be eligible for the playoffs after winning the ACC Championship game. The extra game makes all the difference.

I don't see how this is news. All Power 5 conference champions have the opportunity to make the playoffs with one loss.

It is news to the extent that last year people were saying the ACC Champion needed to be undefeated in order to make the playoffs. Now the perception has changed.

It has nothing to do with perception and has everything to do with the factual situation.

Last year, FSU was undefeated and the other four Power 5 champions had one loss. If FSU had a loss, their schedule - but mostly their performance in their games - would likely not have been enough to put them in the playoff.

Clemson could have lost a game this year and very well still been in.

NDE..............

Good points, well taken.
Clemson is starting the season #1 and FSU is starting #5 (based on the pre-season top 25 polls). It is easier to see one of these teams losing early, beating the other team in November, winning the ACC and still making it into the Playoffs with 1 loss.

As an example, if FSU loses to Ole Miss to start the season, but they beat #15 UNC, #1 Clemson, #20 UF and #15 UNC again in the Conference Championship they can probably get into the playoffs with a loss. Of course, this is all speculation right now but it does seem feasible. Conference Championships matter for sure.

Clemson or FSU would have a good shot at getting in the playoff with a loss. UNC or anyone else from the ACC, much less so.

You have no way of knowing whether this statement is true.

That remains to be seen. If Clemson and FSU both have a loss by the end of September, it could all blow up.

So what you're saying is... since Clemson went undefeated, made it to the NC game, hung with Alabama and has all their starters returning in 2016, they might get the benefit of the doubt
for the 2016 playoff if they should lose a game before winning the ACC CG??

Just want to be clear, because it sounds like that's what you're saying.

And your point is what?

The '15 season is over now. Time to look forward to '16 and maybe do a little speculating. I intend to write a post imagining what it might be like if/when ND joins the ACC full time in football. Need a little time to think that one thru though. ;)

Alice.........

Nice to hear from you. You are most likely right in the short run. ND will have to be on the outside looking in a few more times before joining the ACC. However, I maintain it will happen though and no one on this will be too surprised when it does.

Change is inevitable and in recent years ND football has been changing at "Warp Speed" relatively speaking. Plenty more to come!

ACC is trending up. Clemson obviously, and Dabo isn't leaving that spot anytime soon, UNC ended on fire the offense there is scary, and now UVA has Bronco. It doesn't mean that ND is joining but it should quiet the naysayers about the scheduling agreement. Between top tier games and a strong recruiting presence in the south the arrangement has been a hige boon. The bigger concern to ND's independent is the ruling that the Big 12 can have a title game. Ou didnt belong this year...a title game makes it very difficult for ND.

The ACC is FSU, and Clemson(every once in a while). The ACC is weak that's what hurts the ACC.

Look for big improvements by Miami, UNC, Syracuse, VT, Louisville, Virginia and others. All those new football coaches will shake things up.

I disagree. Clemson was head and shoulders above the other teams. If they can put back to back years together of elite play .. then they could very well get in with a loss.

Too many intangibles with reputation and such to say this is automatic.
