a nice Irish/Shockers preview (link)

Notre Dame entered the NCAA tournament one of the hottest teams in the country. They advanced to their first Sweet 16 since 2003. Some believe if any team in the Midwest Region can beat Kentucky, it could be the Irish.

Most fans think that the Shockers of Wichita State are better than the Irish of Notre Dame, and while the Shockers may be under seeded, they have a great chance to prevail over the Irish. This is the fourth appearance in a row in the NCAA tournament for Wichita State, which includes a final four loss to Louisville.

What can Notre Dame do to slow down the shock of the Shockers?

Consistency from guards Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker are the heart and soul of the Shockers' offense. Their success on both ends of the floor will determine the winner of this game. The post-play of Darius Carter could be another huge factor. Carter has the size advantage. Another instance where coach Mike Brey might give the inside to help close out the three-point shot for Wichita State. Zach Auguste and Bonzie Colson have played solid for the Irish even though playing at times with a size disadvantage.

Indiana's offense exposed Wichita State on defense. If Notre Dame can make push the pace, control the tempo, and make shots, then the I would give the edge to Mike Brey's club. The Irish must limit VanVleet who scored 29 points against the Hoosiers and 17 points versus Kansas.

Scoring from the three-point line will be crucial. The long-range consistency (eight total three-pointers made in two games) hasn't been there for Notre Dame, a big reason why games in the first two rounds have been close.

The solid play at the point of Demetrius Jackson must continue. Jackson must continue to be aggressive and drive into the lane. Jerian Grant must be a little less passive and more aggressive, and use his ability to generate plays by getting to the foul-line, or forcing the defense to help, while passing out to the perimeter shooters.

I believe the Fighting Irish will rally around coach Brey, who recently lost his mother to a heart attack before the game against Butler on Saturday. This game should be another exciting one, but I think Notre Dame advances to the Elite Eight, where the dream season will continue as they'll likely face overall #1 seed, Kentucky. If Mike Brey can summon up the luck of the Irish and get 110% out of his players, anything is possible. Get past UK, and the Irish might just be playing in April.
