If ND is sticking with Kelly as a head coach, and it's looking more and more like that is going to happen, we still need a defensive coordinator. Charlie Strong is in need of a job, we need a coordinator. Why haven't we hired him yet? It would immediately help with recruiting and Strong would be able to take over the reigns when we do fire Kelly.

Doubt Charlie strong is going to pass up $10 million over the next 2 years to become DC for a lame duck coach like purple face.

I believe the Buy-Out offset is contingent on him getting a HC job and even still it only gives a credit for what he gets paid it doesn't disappear.

Strong just got fired last week and ND should already have him on staff as DC? Do you think ND can just tell people they have to coach there? Also, you are wanting Strong to take over for Kelly when he leaves...did you not watch him crumble at TX over the last 3 years?

Not at all sure Kelly is in any position to be hiring anyone. Hope for clarity on this today. If he is returning, then of course Strong would be an attractive hire. Assuming Strong wants to get back to coaching next year, he will weigh the possibility of getting another HC position immediately versus returning to being a DC and rehabilitating his stature. The only way I would take the DC position at ND if I were Strong would be as Associate HC with the understanding that Kelly plans to step down next year or the following year, and assurances that he would be heir apparent IF ND and the defense achieves certain performance metrics. Can't see ND capable of going down that road.

Are you nuts? This demonstrates the delusional perspective of ND's status today. Why would any capable coach accept a deck chair on a sinking ship? This guy just got fired, he doesn't need another negative on his resume. Not going to happen. Move on.

as long as HC is Keligula, nothing and noone else matters.

Disagree about the sinking ship, this team is loaded with young talent.

I get your frustration perse. You have to let go. Stop insinuating that the players are not up to par. The fact that Harbaugh has won 10 games back to back seasons should give you an indication that a good coach can work wonders on a program, also its players. The mere fact that Wisconsin, Oregon* Virginia tech Michigan st. Recruit at a lower clip than us should point out the obvious. Oregon i wouldnt consider Helfrich necessarily a good coach. Neither is Kelly. I refuse to believe that the same players we get are'nt on par with say Lsu or FSU. When they commit to ND they dont suddenly add 2 stars and they have the same offers.

It's loaded with talent but has a weak leader.
No, sorry, I disagree. Defense, especially the DLine is very, very suspect. The DBs are average to below average and I can't think of one defensive player that an opposing coach will have to alter his game plan to work around. You need that to really be successful. Some talent on offense to work with - over all not a bad talent level, but not top 10 material either. There are holes, in too many places unfortunately. But...with the right kind of new coach...?

You may be right about the talent level, but look at Wisconsin. They're not recruiting 4 and 5-star players on defense but their system seems to work well enough to get the job done. I think it's more about knowing what you have and then putting them in the right place to make the plays.

I saw what happened at Texas. I also saw the recruits he brought in. And I also saw his coaching job at Louisville. Don't force him, but make an attractive offer. He has ND connections and was a D coordinator and a very good one at that. Coaches and players respect him. It would be a great hire, in my opinion.

Don't agree that our DB's coming back are average to below average. Assuming Watkins and Crawford return from injuries without any deterioration in their physical abilities, and with Studstill and Love, we have a very strong foundation going forward. Throw in Elliott and Pride, and a new DC, and we have the makings of a better than average defensive backfield. I agree about the DL, and Tillery's play concerns me the most as I expected him to have a very good year this past season, and to come into next season as the stud leader of this group, and he continues to disappoint on many levels.

there are wholes in the roster. It is about balance. Team is as strong as the weak link. And yep, I am losing it reading some of this insanity.

Correct there are holes. I stated this before. That's what happens when a lame duck coach n staff get a hold of solid recruits. He did'nt build proper depth nor develop said talent. Hardly a player problem.

welll, the holes are going to be sink holes by 2017/18

Perfect example look at Bama this wkend. Watch how the guy thats 3rd on the depth chart plays with the same technique, tenacity. Watch how violent there hands are. Its a beautiful thing to behold! Clemson same thing very impressed by those D lines. Clemson is young also so that tells you something with Wilkens, Bryant, Lawrence and Ferrel thats 3 fr.

No argument there with dufus running the show. Just truly mind blown a Univ. Such as ND consistantly gets it wrong. Think they oughtta blow up the whole system recalibrate back to1940. Possibly find what they lost when Holtz walked out the door.
