My father passed on Thursday, he was a Sub-Alum.

Born in Hartford CT in 1931, he saw his first game with his father when they played Army in NY. Both father and grand father were hooked and life long fans.

Over the years my father and i went to several BG and season games. He would tell me stories of how they played ND games on the radio in downtown Hartford so you could hear it on the street. He was the generation that was raised to be IRISH if you were in the NE, Catholic and enjoyed CFB.

He was not a BK fan, he did recognize the good work he did. He loved Lou but idolized Leahy. Always talked about the 40's teams. He complained, cheered and hoped like all ND fans.

He enjoyed this board, too old to post, i would read many of your posts to him and he would say "like that one". While none on this board really know me or my father, he was the reason I am a fan so I wanted to post. We lost a good one.

Army Ranger, first into Korea, combat infantry badge and purple heart. Boxer in Hartford, Dancer in NY. We dont make them like that generation anymore. Prayers are appreciated. GO IRISH!

Thank you for sharing! Totally appreciate your dad’s story. Sorry for your loss, but know from your post that you were Close and that he will remain in your daily thoughts. Prayers for you and your family.

Sorry for your loss.

I would sit my kitchen as a boy in the 70s with my dad and my brother and listen to the ND football radio broadcast. Never missed a game. My father was born in 1930 but died many years ago. He also talked about Leahy. I relate to your post 100 %. I bet many on this board do as well. Keep the legacy alive. Go Irish !!

My condolences. I have an 89 year old patient who graduated from ND in 1953. We’ll occasionally talk about those Leahy years.

Thank you all for the posts. Small world as many have similar stories. He was a bad ass. Chosen Frozen. Combat infantry badge and Purple Heart. Like most of our dads, put his uniform away and you would never know he fought. Never talked about the war.
We are losing lots of special dads and Americans now as they age.

Again, thank you all. Greatly helped me.

RIP to your father, @ftnfan62, and condolences to you and your family.

I love hearing stories about Subway Alumni like your pops. They are a core part of ND's rich football history and fabric. ND wouldn't be what it is without the Subway Alumni.

Your father's service to our great country is richly appreciated. Combat veteran, boxer, dancer: it sounds like he lived a life in full.
