Are you sure about this? Not a single P4 team showed a loss? Your statement is incorrect because Rutgers is a P4 school in the BIG10 and they showed a deficit of $70 million for 23-24 fiscal year.

Ohio State?????? Is this right?
You know what spendthrifts tOSU are. Their profligates, they blew through their money. They don't save for a rainy day over there. I'm just surprised all these schools have all these millions of dollars lying around. They're always pleading and crying poverty. They can't afford to pay the players. Turns out they got millions in leftover cash. Especially KU, which I wouldn't have expected for some reason.

Thank you. I added a note to my OP to clarify important context you pointed out.

FYI...Rutgers reports breakeven in all of its sports, an indication the university is subsidizing the Ath Dept in a big way. Below is revenue and expense reported to USDOE by Rutgers.

Trckcomb ($4.4M)
FldHcky ($2.4M)
Football ($62M)
Golf ($2.3M)
Gymn ($3M)
Lacrsse ($5.2M)

And to an anticipated follow-up, here is what Notre Dame reported. All sports reported breakeven except Football and Unallocated. A reasonable conclusion is Football subsidizes all other sports AND contributes to the University. That the Ath Dept contributes to the University scholarship funds every year has been well-publicized by the University for decades.

Sport (rev & exp except as noted)
Baseball ($3.4M)
Bskball ($20.6M)
Trckcomb ($4.8M)
Fencing ($2.7M)
Football ($150.2M -$68.8M = $81.4M Surplus)
Golf ($3M)
Hockey ($5.7M)
Lacrsse ($7.1M)
Rowing ($2.9M)
Soccer ($5.7M)
Softball ($3.1M)
SwimDivng ($4.5M)
Tennis ($3.1M)
Vollball ($3.9M)
Unallocated ($14M -$69.7M = $-55.7M Deficit)
Total ($234.7M $-209M = $25.7M Surplus)

No worries, thanks for the clarification. Rutgers like everything else tied to NJ government is mismanaged.

You are correct, Rutgers university (tax dollars) is subsidizing their athletic department. It's crazy to think that a university of higher learning is taking money away from its core mission to support sports.

Awesome info, thanks. Looking at these numbers I can't help but think of Chaseballs posts about Notre Dame making "billions and billions" of dollars from football. Just proves how clueless he is about basic business principles.

Im surprised basketball has such a huge deficit, I would have thought they'd be at least break-even if not slightly profitable.

Basketball amount shown it total revenue and also total expenses - I.e., it is breakeven. From the data provided USDOE it is not possible to tell the extent to which Basketball or any of the other breakeven sports are subsidized.
