First.........two points of view.

1. National point of view--the view held by fans primarily from the power 5 conferences.

2. The ND view--all of the homers and some of the graduates (Some graduates tend to be a little more realistic in their expectations than the homers that all believe ND will never lose any game ever.)

Schedule
National view--ND has an incredibly soft schedule this year.
  • Playing 2 service academies plus Nevada equals 3 automatic wins.
  • Their 5 ACC teams just happen to be 5 of the conference weaklings primarily due to coaching changes and 3 of the 5 are at home. (The schedule completely misses FSU, Clemson, UNC and Louisville).
  • Only 4 road games.
  • Both Stanford and Michigan State are at home.
  • USC is going through coaching changes........again.
  • With an open date ND has 2 weeks to prepare for Miami.
ND view--ND has a tough schedule this year!
  • Navy is one of the toughest teams in the entire country.
  • ND has to travel to Texas, Army and USC.
  • All teams play ND like it's their most important game of the year. ACC teams can sneak up on you. (Although one poster predicts ND will beat Mark Richt and Miami by 34 points!)
Injuries

National view--No excuses this year. ND has 2 solidly proven QB's with one being a Heisman hopeful and the other with a good solid year under his belt. And, ND has had a year to heal up and get ready for the season.

ND view--ND just always has bad luck with injuries, way more than any other schools. ND has the two best QB's in all of college football if they can just stay away from injuries.

Offense

National view--ND runs a finesse offense and relies on illegal blocks down field however, it is a fairly predictable offense, pass first and not much power running.

ND view--ND has a well balanced offense (and I wish they would run more).

Defense

National view--ND's Achilles heel. Best to run right at them and throw if needed. Weak d-line and very weak secondary.

ND view--This is the year the D will turn it all around. Coach knows what he is doing.

Coaching

National view--Brian Kelly is a so-so coach that occasionally pulls some really bone headed plays. Although he's improved somewhat he's nowhere near elite status. Hope he stays around and keeps the same D coordinator.

ND view--Brian Kelly is a top 5 coach and really deserves to be coach of the year most every year. He's also one of the best recruiters in the land and the best QB coach in the land. (Note: Some graduates would disagree vehemently!)

Bottom Line

The 2 schools of thought offer a lot of room for debate. But, one thing is for sure (well, let's say fairly certain), ND will need to be undefeated in order to have hopes of making the playoffs. Once again, without a 13th game Conference Champions will be favored. Right now that is just the way the system is set up.

Duo - did you take a national poll?

Why are you so obsessed with ND? Don't you need to worry about FSU instead?

....Bill,

Lots of CFB friends including ND! Ask around.........if you find differing opinions by all means post them. FSU's season pretty much comes down to one thing...........beat Deshaun Watson and Clemson. No easy task as you might assess. And no, I don't worry about CFB. Amusing conversation though.

Bill, do you feel this is the year ND will make the playoffs?

It all hinges on defense and if BVG can fix it. If he doesn't then I say his time at ND is over.

Good to hear back Bill. A while back I made a comparison to Al Golden at Miami. Al kept his crony around as the D coordinator and decided to do or die with him. Unfortunately for Al that was a bad decision. Didn't hurt him financially as he had a big buy out. Nothing like Charlie's but several million none the less. Anyway, it will indeed be interesting to see just how the ND D does in 2016 and what the repercussions if any turn out to be. Most coaches give up a sacrificial lamb in order to save their own jobs. We shall see.

What do you think will be ND's first big challenging game?

What do you think will be ND's first big challenging game?

Texas. First game of season is always a challenge. Because you never know what the team's chemistry is and if you have the correct parts in place until you play somebody else. I know Texas is not the Texas of years past, but you never know.

What outlet or individual has sincerely described Zaire as a Heisman hopeful? Or even a possible?

Nationally, it seems to me Kelly is considered more than a so-so coach, although I agree few would sincerely call him "elite" compared to others. He has been voted National Coach of the Year multiple times so the description of "so-so" does not fit his national reputation.

I apologize in advance, but much of your "analysis" herein is just silly.

Granite.........

The only place I've heard MZ referred to as a Heisman hopeful is on this board. This is not an analysis per se..........more of a contrast of opinions. Re: the silly part. Which do you find silly........the national view or the ND view or both?

And Granite, how do you think the D will be this year? More importantly the secondary............see any chances for freshmen to start?

Huh, does this mean that kelly isn't going to the NFL?

Dear Lord, that can't be true. I think he could help the Rams in the maintenance department.

This season hinges on the opener.

kelly wilts under the brightest lights...

We intimidate no one and every team believes they can beat us.

The ongoing petulant, vulgar and childlike tantrums thrown by kelly demoralize our team while fueling the opposition.

He stinks.

PS Grimes should fight the porker in the Bengal Bouts.

And Granite, how do you think the D will be this year? More importantly the secondary............see any chances for freshmen to start?

Won't try to offer comments on whether freshmen will play; I do not follow high school football so have no sense about the odds of any freshmen getting sufficiently ready.

So.....where are these opinions coming from?

I love to see the facts, supporting these as reasonable, statistically based national views.

But then again, we all know this is just total trolling, made up via retard, so…

OK...
Texas!
Navy!
MSU!
Stanford!
USC!

They will go 4-1 those games. IMO they will get trounced by USC last game of year. They are so talented ..at home...and will have their shit together this year.

Moreover Kelly always finds a way to get really close to something big but just falls short.

I wish that weren't true..trust me I don't!

I think those 2 schools of thought are pretty accurate. The schedule is relatively easy for ND this year. Matter of fact, I think it's too easy. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if ND goes undefeated. No reason they can't. However, should they go undefeated, it doesn't mean ND will be ready to hang with the big boys of Bama, OSU, and FSU. Kelly still has not beaten an elite team. Whether it's coaching, recruiting, or both, the result remains the same: ND is not elite. With that said, I'm disappointed there isn't an elite team on the schedule. Hopefully this is the year ND can make the playoffs and at least win the first game.

Re: "I'm disappointed there isn't an elite team on the schedule."

OK..........Let's take a look at where the ND opponents recruiting is ranked as the season starts. Preseason AP top 25 to follow:

According to 247 Sports,

"2016 Football Recruiting Composite Team Rankings"

11. Texas
Nevada
22. Michigan State
33. Duke
64. Syracuse
49. NC State
16. Stanford
21. Miami *
87. Navy **
Army
41. Virginia Tech
8. USC

247 Sports has Notre Dame ranked #15.

There you have it: 3 unranked teams and 2 teams, Texas and USC ranked higher than ND.

* Miami--Remember bettors, Bodi is giving Miami +34.
** Navy--Although 247 Sports has them ranked #87 at least one poster here considers Navy one of the toughest teams in the entire country.

At this point it appears ND's toughest game will be at USC the last game of the season, a must win in order to go undefeated and make the playoffs.

Precisely, you cannot create a "national point of view" if you are incapable of making a "point" and you have idea what you are viewing (football).Otherwise you are nothing more than a 3 year old child in a restaurant banging his silverware against the table, desperately trying to get some adult attention.
