Greg Ladky and Mike Singer asked a great question in their latest YouTube recruiting video "Can the Irish stay #1?" If you have not watched it make sure you do, as Greg has a great Rivals points breakdown on where this 2022 ND class stands compared to past years. The video got me wondering what is the 1 position all the teams in the "Top 5" have? If you want to have a top 5 recruiting class then you better sign a 5 or 4 star Quarterback.

I went back to the 2017 Notre Dame recruiting class when the Brian Kelly "Re-Boot" began and looked at the top 5 classes in Rivals. Over the five years Georgia is the only program in every top 5, and they signed three 5 star QB's and two 4 stars. Alabama and Ohio State are in the top 5 four times with Bama signing one 5 star and five 4 stars, and the Buckeyes signing one 5 star and five 4 stars.

Oklahoma, USC, Clemson, Oregon, each signed one top 5 class, but they signed a 5 star QB. Michigan and Florida State signed one top 5 class and they had a 4 star. LSU has signed three top 5 classes and got two 4 star's and one 3 star. Texas had two classes signing two 4 stars and one 3 star. Penn State had one top 5 finish signing a 3 star.

Over these five years their have been 30 Quarterbacks signed and only 3 of them were a 3 star.

During this 5 year period Notre Dame signed two 3 stars in Avery Davis and Brendon Clark. The 4 stars are Phil Jurkovec, Drew Pyne, and Tyler Buchner. As we all know if we go back to 2016 ND signed 3 star Ian Book. The 2 best classes in the last 5 years for Notre Dame were in 2018 #11 and 2021 #9 and ND signed a 4 star QB.

Notre Dame is currently the only team in the top 9 with a 3 star QB commit. Can ND stay in the top 5 with 3 star QB Steve Angeli?
