The image of a college football game going into the late afternoon is about to get another hit. The NCAA rules committee approved the change keeping the clock running after first downs. The NFL already allows that.

The status quo certainly is to cave to the Sports Networks who provide the 63 minutes of commercial time allotted on Saturdays. Already clear is the result will be plays run by student athletes will be lessened. Hey, they may need that recover time after a first down No! Cfb averages about 160 plays per game 40 more than professional football.

While rosters filled with 100 plus football players are looking for opportunities(REPS) the established administrators may be stepping blind by penalizing the enjoyments seen in college football. Assistant rules chair Coach Kirby Smart has said the hazard of injuries will be helped by the change. Interesting, have they asked the ATHLETES(nil) their opinion in significant ways on this? Smart said we'll try it out.Hopefully he checks that out with Chairman Boo Corrigan. I doubt the networks will look back.

The game has grown as a media with spectators--47.5 million fans attending(2019) and 392 regular season telecasts reaching 145 million homes. Popular and the University of Notre Dame has put out a 80 million ad for evidence. Saturdays pre-game and post game celebrations are obviously a large part of what makes it special.

But,the actual games are delayed by reviews(8-20minutes) teams get 2/2minutes and they're bothersome. The halftime is 20 minutes and the exit and enter times of magnificent bands makes me wonder why not flip a coin for pre and post game band performances? And why not just limit overtime to one share of possession?

The Networks who support the show for viewers are mega-businesses who do not really suffer when a game goes 4 minutes late. It's a dime in their financial calendar.
Notre Dame Football Coach Marcus Freeman said this week we play with the rules they give us. A 3hr and 22 minute ballgame is not too long.
The 11 minutes of real football playing time in a 60 minute game cannot take another hit.
