Notre Dame and Oregon are two Top 10 programs who run a similar version of a spread offense that both lost this weekend to inferior teams. What I mean by inferior teams is based upon recruiting rankings as Notre Dame and Oregon are generally in the top 20 in recruiting rankings. For instance, the Cincinnati Bearcats have below average ranked recruiting classes versus Notre Dame, but have a Head Coach in Luke Fikel who knows how to develop players. 2 Star 6'3" Dual-Threat QB Desmod Ridder (One Scholarship Offer) has been coached up to be a future high round NFL draft choice. In defense of Oregon. they may not always get the highest ranked quarterback, but they go after Dual-Threat QB's that fit the program. Justin Herbert was a 6'6" three star ranked player and future NFL 1st Round Draft Choice I hate to say it, but Jack Coan is a nice kid but does not fit Notre Dames system. This football staff seems lost when it comes to analyzing and developing a recruit who is going to fit into the Notre Dame system. They got lucky with Ian Book who turned out to be an excellent intermediate passer and above average runner. However, it appears Notre Dame only gets lucky once every 5 years with Deshone Kizer being the only other Notre Dame Quarterback during Coach Kelly's Era to be drafted by the NFL.

To Notre Dames credit they try to sign high rated quarterbacks but most are Pro-style QB's who do not develop into Dual-Threat quarterbacks with the exception of Ian Book:

Notre Dame Quarterbacks:
2016 Ian Book 6'0' Pro Style QB Rivals Rank 5.7 15 Position (Best Offers ND, WSU and Boise State).
2018 Phil Jurkovek 6'5" Dual Treat QB Rank 5.9 5 Position (Best Offers ND, Bama and Clemson)
2019 Brendon Clark 6'2" Pro Style QB Rank 5.7 20 Position (Best Offer ND, Clemson, and NC)
2020 Drew Pyne 5'11" Pro Style QB Rank 5.9 7 Position (Best Offers ND, Bama and LSU)
2021 Tyler Buchner 6'2" Dual Threat Rank 5.9 6 Position (Best Offers Bama and USC)

In my opinion, Notre Dame needs to recruit Dual Threat Quarterbacks taller then 6'2" and hire a top QB Coach to develop them if they want to continue to run a spread offense in the future.
