The Athletic has a story this morning stating that the College Football Playoff management committee is going to meet next week in an attempt to try and come to an agreement on what the size of the playoff field should be going forward.

The three choices being debated are:

1) Keep the current 4-team model. The only one who would be fine with this is the SEC.

2) An 8-team model with 5 automatic bids to the current Power-5 conference champions plus three at large bids. Those backing this model are the ACC, Big10 and Pac12.

3) The 12-team model that was recommended earlier that gives bids to the 6 highest ranked conference champions plus 6 bids to the highest ranked at large teams. The SEC, Big12, Notre Dame and the group of five conferences favor this model.

Per the linked article: .....if an eight-team model included designated automatic qualifiers, it’s a nonstarter for both the SEC and Notre Dame.

A source suggested that one potential compromise could be a 12-team model — the size preferred by the SEC and Notre Dame — with AQ spots for all Power 5 conference champions — a priority for the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12.

“There are people in the ‘only eight’ camp, and people in the ‘only 12’ camp,” one source said. “You walk into the room having no idea how it will go.”

It is truly astounding the amount of power and clout that one small catholic college in northern Indiana wields in college football.
