One night after beating Ohio State in front of Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman, the Irish hockey team scratched its way to a tie and shootout victory on Saturday in Compton Family Ice Arena.

Notre Dame fell behind 2-0 in the first 24 minutes Saturday with Ohio State's Mason Lohrei scoring a power-play goal in the first period and Dalton Messina adding a goal 3:08 into the second period.

The two teams combined for 11 penalties in the first 24 minutes of the game. But Notre Dame went the final 36 minutes of regulation without another penalty and took advantage of an Ohio State penalty to eventually tie the game.

First, Jack Adams put Notre Dame on the board with 13:07 left in the second period. Then Nick Leivermann evened things up with a one-timer on the power play with 9:13 left in the period.

Notre Dame goaltender Ryan Bischel had to withstand an onslaught of shots to push the game into overtime. Ohio State managed 38 shots in the second and third periods. Bischel saved 37 of them. He finished the night with 49 saves with five coming in overtime.

By winning the shootout, Notre Dame gained an extra point in the Big Ten standings. The Irish needed nine rounds to push the shootout in their favor with a goal by Chase Blackmun followed by a miss by Ohio State. Leivermann and Hunter Strand notched the other shootout goals for Notre Dame.

On Friday night, Notre Dame won 2-1 on the strength of two Landon Slaggert goals. Bischel allowed one goal on 38 shots. The lone Ohio State goal came from Jake Wise on a power play.

Notre Dame (14-14-4, 9-10-3) likely still needs to win the Big Ten Tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament, but it may have kept its faint hopes for an at-large berth alive with its weekend performance against Ohio State (17-11-2, 10-9-1).

Notre Dame will have a long break until it finishes the regular season with a two-game series at current No. 5 Michigan on Feb. 24-25.
