The only team with fewer ACC wins than Notre Dame came into South Bend on Friday and beat the Irish in the first of a three-game series at Frank Eck Stadium.
Pittsburgh starter Ryan Andrade picked up his first victory of the season by pitching into the eighth inning of a 3-1 victory over the Irish (23-21, 7-18 ACC).
Andrade (1-4) pitched seven scoreless innings before allowing an RBI single to designated hitter Brady Grumpf in the bottom of the eighth. Pitt (19-23, 6-16) pulled Andrade, who struck out seven batters and walked two of them, for Phil Fox after a sacrifice bunt moved ND runners to second and third. Fox escaped with no further damage done by striking out center fielder TJ Williams, who made a spectacular catch in the third inning, and forcing left fielder David Glancy into a fly out.
Notre Dame third baseman Simon Baumgardt came to the plate representing the tying run in the bottom of the ninth following a single by first baseman Connor Hincks. But a fly ball to center field ended the rally attempt.
Irish starter Matt Bedford (2-6) allowed three runs, six hits and four walks with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Reliever Ricky Reeth gave the Irish four scoreless innings to stay within striking distance.
Pitt plated its first run in the third inning with an RBI single by Josh Spiegel. Luke Cantwell doubled in the fourth to score two more runs.
Jack Radel (4-2, 3.86 ERA) is expected to take the mound as Notre Dame's starter in Saturday's matchup (4 p.m. on ACC Network) against Jack Sokol (5-2, 4.78).
