Will this force ND to join a (conference)?

You morons just don't get it. ND football will never join a conf.
If college football moves to four 16 team super conferences we sure as hell will be joining a conference. Independence does not require pig headed stupidity.

Yeah, but if we were to end up with four 16 team conferences, we might as well watch the NFL.

Dreaming of super conf's is stupid. No one wants that other than morons.

I'm not in favor of it at all either. I'm just saying, IF it did happen, we would definitely be in one of those conferences. Being independent just won't work in that tight of a structure. Especially so if the playoff ends up just being the four winners.

The problem with super conferences is that they are so large that you would miss out on playing most teams in the opposite division. Are cupcake home pay day games (UMass, UNLV, Troy, etc) still in play? Athletic departments have gotten used to that bonus money that funds lacrosse, field hockey, tennis, swimming, etc etc.

Fans are always saying that the playoff could easily be made longer by shortening the regular season. But schools almost uniformly LIKE the regular season as it is. Change will be very slow because there is no strong central authority like you see with the NFL. The college football world is more like the squabbling U.N. than it is a single minded country.

I don't know if that is true. Many strong football schools would like to break off from the have-nots and take all the ESPN/Fox/CBS money for themselves. Since the large programs collectively probably have 85% of the college football fans, I can see their point.

Correct. Conferences should go back to 10 teams. Play a 9 game conference schedule and eliminate the CCG, which is nothing more than a money grab anyway.

Then expand the playoffs to an 8 team format. What bothers me is how in the heck can the FCS put together a playoff system but the FBS can't. Nonsense.

ND should remain an independent as long as it makes sense to do so.

Fight On! We will see you good folks on Saturday. Hope it's a good game.

The FBS COULD put together a larger playoff. They simply don't want to. Schools feel they have a golden goose now that they do not want to risk killing.

The expansion of conferences to 12 and 14 schools has already resulted in some members of the same conference not playing each other for several years at a time. Expanding to 16 would only make the problem worse.

It's more likely that the playoff goes to 8 teams, rather than the formation of 4 16-team conferences.

The schools are going to be careful in doing anything that treats their student athletes more like NFL players. Change IMO will come much more slowly because cutting back the season by one game would mean the loss of $300 (?) million. Schools that make a lot of money per home game (ND, Ohio State, Alabama) don't want to trade that money for the same share of playoff money that Indiana would receive.

I hope to hell you are right. If you assume that everyone of the eight teams was going to play in a bowl game anyway, the net result will be two teams that play one extra game, and two that play two extra games. Right now we already have two teams playing one extra game, so the "additional game" impact will only be felt by the two teams in the final, who will be playing the extra game. IMHO, that's a worthy tradeoff for how much better an 8 team playoff would be for college football in general; with every P5 champion being in the playoff and three at-large bids to pretty much guarantee that a worthy team will be included.

I don't think I said anything about cutting back the regular season.

what some here are forgetting is the whole 'concussion' and health issues. THAT is why there will be no more games added to the regular season and indeed there will be pressure to reduce.

OP is an idiot anyway- super conferences might have come about 15 years or so ago but not in the present or foreseeable future climate of caution and everything else. With this rumbling about unions and paying players ongoing the universities and the NCAA are going to be very careful about any changes that do not seem to be PR advantageous.

going to 8 teams frankly is dumb. I would go to 6 teams with the top 2 getting a by. 8 is too many you will get on most years a team or two that truly do not belong.
