Urban Meyer's Formula For Success In 2020 Should Favor Notre Dame

Former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer believes there’s a formula to success this season, and if he’s accurate it could mean very good news for Notre Dame.

“… If you open up with Virginia Tech, Oklahoma … (Ohio State’s) going to play Oregon this year, you can’t do that,” continued the future Hall of Fame coach. “But if you’re playing a team that you’re just so far superior in talent, I treated that like an extension of training camp.”

Notre Dame opens the season with Navy, Arkansas, Western Michigan and Wake Forest. While not a cake walk schedule, it’s certainly more than manageable, and to Meyer’s point, Notre Dame has a far superior roster to each of those opponents."

He has a very good point. This is going to be a very unique year. But, in Meyer's statement -- he mentions playing against "far superior teams" -- these are the games that scare ND fans in that teams under Kelly, for the most part, come out flat and make the games much more difficult than they should be. Yes, one cannot play at a high emotional level 4 weeks solid, but, you can play with energy and passion in those games. These games, like Meyer noted, are ones younger guys should be able to get in and get evaluated.

No matter who wins, the ‘20 NC there will be an * next to it in the minds of fans.
Quarantined players are going to be a huge part of the season.
JMO, if there is any kind of season, there should be no playoffs this year.

Coach Holtz was the very best at getting the players to rise up from the basement and beat gokiath.

Holtz had Goliath but Monday through Thursday he made us feel like David.....until Tbursday evening/Friday hit he started turning the tide makimg us feel like Goliath and the opponent has no business even being on the field with us.

BK is not even in the same stratosphere in trying to get the most from his players. Really ridiculous tbh that in 15 years of Cinci and ND he's still looking for a top 5 victory and a major bowl game win.

You'd almost think someone has to try and do that to not win just one of those on accident.

And yet if, Big IF, he wins 1 title, he'll have the same amount as coach Holtz had.

The type of superior talent that Meyer is referring to is the type of talent the perennial power houses are securing .. not teams like ND who are recruiting in the mid teens.

And he didnt want the challenge of recruiting here at ND. He took 2 of the easiest places to recruit at. Not saying he wouldnt be great here, but he didnt want that challenge

I’ll still take BK over UM.

Holtz not only was a master motivator, but he and his assistant coaches usually came up with a scheme that worked in those games as well. Kelly is neither a master motivator nor a coach who can out X and O the guy on the other sideline. He's also an average recruiter for all that Notre Dame has to offer.

33-6 over the last three years. And all you do is offer up assistants with no HC experience.

How will we ever win another game with such an awful coach?

Right. It's always an excuse
You don't think the schedule is more favorable present day?
While I'm glad we still have yet to put a D1AA school on the schedule....
for several reasons these are not the ND schedules of yesteryear.

Ive looked at 2 different sites for sos over the last 3 years. During that time we're ranked between 2nd and 31st in sos during those 3 seasons on 2 different sites. Id say thats pretty good for going 33 and 6. We're not playing a bum schedule. We plat a solid schedule every year. Better than most teams

You're using the wrong metric.

Looking at a ranked schedule amid every other team who fills in spots with D1AA schools is skewed.

Just do the eye test.
The yearly MSU game? Gone.
The yearly Pitt game? Gone.
Etc, etc, etc,

We use Mac teams now as fillers and while not as pathetic as SEC teams playing the Citadel it's still not what we've been accustomed to.
I realize things have to change because of our ACC obligation to allow them to beat the shit out of our Men's basketball team (stupid idea) but still....

In the end none if it means anything because we can't win a big moment game under BK. He's just incapable.
You better believe there's a reason why we have big stats against the weak and anemic against the strong. Always.
You talk run blocking.
Look at our Nelson McGlinchey year.
Two of the best in the land.
Every weak opponent Josh Adams was 33 trucking.
Every string opponent he had a flat tire.
His YPC cements it.

You can talk all day about needing to run the ball but until we back the better teams off with big play potential the anemic 1.8 yards per carry will continue.

Im comparing our 13 game schedule vs other p5 teams schedules. We are better than most. Making our 33 and 6 record pretty impressive

Ouch!

And, Formula is hoping everyone else loses key players to quarantine the week you play them.

Teams that are willing to play in ‘20 will have a big recruiting advantage.

And it took Holtz just 3 years to accomplish what Kelly hasn’t in 10, and may never. No comparison between the two. Holtz was far superior than BK ever will be.
No kidding. Point is if BK wins 1 title he will match what Holtz had in his career
