During the game i actually got a useful bit of information from the TV people. Which is about as rare as getting some useful information on a free message board. After 7 years Brian Kelly was able to put together a clear plan for ND, and now recruits specifically to put together a roster that can compete at the highest levels of college football. Without having to sit around counting Star Ratings and stupid FX formulas!

1. Build dominant Offensive Lines *Very doable at ND*
2. Get dominant TE's *Very doable at ND* (Fasano, Carlson, Rudolph, Eifert, Nikolas, Kmet, Mayer) Any questions?
3. Get big time QB play (This has been very, very tricky but Ian Book finally settled down the position)
4. BIG outside WR's with a BIG catch radiuses that can win 50/50 balls in the air over smaller DB's. This enables ND to make big plays down the field without having to rely on that 5 star All World WR that can just run by everyone.
5. Having the stones to flush Chip Long, who was a statistical success, but was reported to be such an asshole with the staff and players, that his offensive teams crapped the bed in the biggest games. Georgia 2017 & 2019, Miami 2017, Clemson 2018, Michigan 2019. The ND offense and Ian Book played fearless vs then #1 Clemson , and played fearless in big road game @ UNC. That NEVER happened under Chip Long. This is Brian Kellys offense, he is the best play caller on the staff, he is the best OC on the staff, but he backed away to run the entire program. Now he has the whole offensive staff aligned correctly.
6. Developing a deep DL. A DL that does not necesarily have that All World 3 Tech, or that All World Edge Rusher, but a DL that can roll out 7-8 guys that can all play ball.
7.. Settle on Defensive Philosophy that is more aggressive than the Diaco scheme, less confusiing than the BVG s-show. The Elko/Lea 4-2-5 is the perfect blend of aggession and simplicity. Not to mention by all accounts Clark Lea is a great teacher and may be the best DC at ND since Joe Yonto.
8. Win Strength & Conditioning. When you hear Brian Kelly talk about sports psychology, rest and recovery, nutrition, players running at a certain MPH etc. You know you have a Head Coach & S&C coach that are as sharp as a tacks and dialed into the physical and mental preparation of their football teams.

Whomever succeeds Brian Kelly at this job, will want to put his own spin on the things, but after 19 years (1997-2016) of being consistently inconsistent. Jack Swarbrick better make sure his new hire doesn't try to reinvent the wheel and ignore the blue print that Brian Kelly took 7 years to create.

The Alabama game in 2012 taught BK all he needed to know. Main thing is to develop depth on defense especially the front seven.
This staff has an eye for talent or measurables. A lot of NFL teams have matrixes: inside linebackers have to weigh 250lbs, run a 4.6 forty, and be over 6 feet tall. ND likes it CB's in the 6'1" range around 180 to 200lbs. ND loves wide outs around 6'4" weighing in around 230lbs basically another tight end.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the year plays out especially the inevitable rematch with Cleamson for the ACC championship with a good chance at the playoffs.

Similar to Saban, the only missing ingredient is the proto-typical Nick running back. Every year Bama has a 6-1 or 6-2 back between 230-240 that can run. Its like a linebacker playing RB......They where you down and late in games one miss fit and they break it. Be nice to have seen a big back come to ND that has decent speed. Harris for Bama is tough to stop all game long and Bo/Drew are about his size. Like to see us pick up a back in that range.

IF, I feel you've hit on some important points for ND's program moving forward. BK has put the right people in the right places to put ND on a winning path. It may have taken BK a while to figure things out at ND but there are few that doubt it now. I hope he gets one or more NCs before he leaves but the next coach may have the blueprint to be Saban-like as a coach.

If you add a scatback type RB i.e Chris Tyree, it looks alot like Stanford. ND had a lot of unbalanced lines in that game against NC

It kind a looks like BK may outlast Jack. The real issue lies with the President. Will the next president want the football team to continue winning or want to go in a different direction like Father Ted in 1974?

Hesburgh actually became president in 1952 and deemphasized football -- although he always denied that he did anything too extreme.

With all due respect to the original poster, this sounds like a formula to rebuild any program. It has taken a hell of a lot of time, too, not that I doubt Kelly wasn't aiming in this direction from the beginning.
