Some have let injuries be too big a scapegoat, but Lou's new article, VanGorder himself admits that he got out-schemed and just didn't adjust. No fluke that when ND started playing better tempo offenses they got shredded. Joe Schmidt, Cage, Jones, etc were all healthy and played against UNC.
This was my initial concern with BVG. He hasn't been terribly successful in the last decade because his old methods don't mesh with new offenses. He loves to use lots of subpackages and interchange players, giving each guy a role. Can't do that as much anymore. You need your best 11 to be able to play more without subbing for different looks. ND must see drastic changes in the way it defends next year to have the success we hope for. Fortunately we've got several very good players, we just need our DC to implement.
