QB situation

Chase what do you think about malaki Fields the transfer from Virginia? 6ft4 big fast. Put up some stats on Leonard Moore when we played them.

Greathouse is solid. Faison is solid. We always have good TEs. Wisconsin kid seems formidable .

I think our pass catching group is a little underrated here by you. Greathouse torched penn state and Ohio state.

I think it's critical this group takes a step forward this year.
Several solid dudes at WR for sure (between the names you mentioned) but lacking difference making talent/alphas at the position. Funny enough I would have described the position the very same way heading into last year. I think ND is low key prioritizing blocking at WR and Fields' size will help to that end.

ND hasn't been recruiting TE very well in recent years and the position has fallen off quite dramatically since the end of the BK era. I don't think we're going to get much playmaking at all from this group.

If we want to include the QBs in this discussion and make it a topic about the passing game in general I would describe the QBs similarly to how I described the WRs & TEs (solid, unremarkable)

The passing game in general needs major work at ND under MF. This is where the competition at the top of the sport is really separating themselves from ND right now.

My guess on QB competition:

Disclaimer: This is a wild guess into the abyss and im working off of very limited information, so this "prediction" is more or less my theory on how it will break down based on the limited information available:

1. Angeli
2. Carr
3. Minchey

I think people are way overlooking Angeli's track record/experience up to this point and just how good his numbers and efficiency have been while playing. I think people are also overlooking just how much Angeli fits into the current composition & identity of NDs team: run heavy/power football/clock control.

Angeli doesn't need to be the next Jimmy Clausen, but the next Jack Coan would do for now (based on what is available on the roster in 2025)

I think Carr's injury just put him a year behind in his development and Minchey being the lesser of the two prospects will probably be the odd man out.
I don't think Denbrocks offense is run heavy power football.
Denbrock's offense is whatever his best personnel dictates his offense to be.

ND has an elite O-line and an elite RB and not much else on offense (as of the 2025 spring game) and based on a similar offensive profile to last year where they were run/power run heavy i'm assuming something very similar this upcoming season in terms of offensive identity.

Angeli's game fits this team-comp perfectly.

I've said it forever. Spring game formats are not favorable environments to make ANY formative evaluation of a player good or bad. I understand they are for the fans and a necessary part of the promotion of the product. From a coaching standpoint what was accomplished in all the practices leading up to yesterday is far more valuable in the evaluation process than anything else. Great to see so much talent across the board. I'd be surprised if there was not some attrition from portal activity. It's just the nature of the current beast. Looking forward to the portal additions who were not available and the rest of the incoming freshman too.
It's as valuable or a little more valuable than any practice. If you are saying all the other practices compared to that singular one, then yes I'd agree with you. It's 1/15th of a data point

The coaching staff will watch the film of the spring game like any other scrimmage and dissect it and use it as a data point. It's another evaluation point of the team

Angeli doesn't have much experience. It's more than the others but not nearly enough to make a huge difference.

Carrs injury doesn't make him a year behind. That's an odd comment. He was fully healthy for last spring, summer, 2 months of fall, and this entire off-season. He missed 3 months of throwing where he would have been on the scout team

Very good TE if he stays healthy. A loaded rb room and a good wr room.

Not having the QB run makes this offense much different than last year. Need a QB to throw so box isn't loaded. M

If Carr isn't the starter, it will be a surprise

I dont claim to be an expert. I watch the games and I listen to people who cover the sport. I give my opinion like anyone else. I have been right on players and predicting things more than most. And I've been wrong just like every single person in football history

I've been right much more than you. And like I said Leonard was a better signing than Hartman and he was the QB on a team that won 3 playoff games and helped get us to the NC. I'll take that assessment just about every year. Leonard college career will be much better than the guy you wanted, Angeli. But you won't admit that when Angelis career is over and he doesn't have the career that Leonard did. You'll say 1st rd talent 1st rd talent.
You came to a conclusion based off of one scrimmage, and what you read about one practice.. 😂
Ok yea, you are like everyone else on this and every other forum, including myself. You don't know sh1t

One constant: After the Blue Gold game, this board devolves into a pissing contest between a couple of posters, thus spoiling the fun of talking about ND football..

I came to that conclusion from watching both of their high school tapes, watching all of their spring games, watching Angeli in games and listening to what media members say who see them in practice and what other players and coaches have said about them. I've seen them throw in person as well. Carr throws a better ball and has better zip. He had a quicker release. It's not only 1 practice you fool 🤣🤣

Don't take my opinion who cares. Eric Hansen from this site says Carr. Tim Prister says Carr. Both have covered the team for 30 years. Tim Hyde says Carr he's at on3 former coach. Driskell says Carr former coach. Pete Sampson says Carr. Most people who have seen them throw will pick Carr

No one knows shit except you

Yeah unfortunately NJ has a personal problem with me and he can't discuss or debate.

I like to discuss or debate with anyone. He tried to make it personal which ruins the thread

You thought Angeli should have started over Leonard

You thought Fickell and Deboer were better hires than MF

You thought Auburn had a better offense than ND last year

Your football opinion means less than zero

If all you have is the Leonard thing to come back with months and months later, that's pretty weak.

By the way, Bill Belichick drafted Mac Jones in the 1st rd. The Chargers drafted Ryan Leaf. The Raiders drafted Jamarcus Russell. The Browns paid 225 million to Deshaun Watson. The Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett. The Bears drafted Mitch Trubisky. I could go on and on and on.

Weak point but that's all you have
As a Raiders fan, why the hell did you have to bring up Jamarcus Russell, a long buried bad nightmare🫤

I'm a Raiders fan too....Can you believe we passed on 5 HOFers to take that guy? Unreal

Could have had Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Darrell Revis, Joe Thomas, Patrick Willis. That draft was loaded and we royally screwed up

We’ve screwed up a lot of drafts. Mayock and Gruden excelled at this. For the first time in years, I’m encouraged with the brain trust that is making the FA signings and I expect a really good draft, for a nice change.

I really want Graham! I’m ok with Jeanty, but I would pass on him and get one of many really good running backs later. Frankly, if we could trade back with a team like Chicago, and get their #9 and #41, I would do that in a heartbeat!

It's just one scrimmage, but Carr was impressive, however he was the only QB to throw an Interception.

Not sure where people think Minchey is ahead of Angeli. Minchey was not accurate, 6-14 for 106 yards, 1 rushing TD. Less than a 50% completion rate.

Carr was 14-19, 170 yards, 2TD's, 1 INT

Angeli finished 8-11 for 106 yards, 1 TD

Carr and Angeli are both accurate, Carr seems to have the stronger arm, Angeli's maturity minimizes mistakes.

This wasn't decided today.
It happens every year… someone has a good spring game and we anoint them the next Junior Jabbie.

Carr’s ceiling is way higher, but who knows how he’ll perform when the lights are bright. Who knows how he performs when we’re down a score or two on the road.

Angeli has flaws but what he lacks in athleticism and arm strength, is more than made up for in accuracy, mechanics and decision making.

The problem with that is that Carrs mechanics are almost flawless and his accuracy is elite. So he really has no advantages that we know of over Carr

Correct. Each and every practice is filmed and evaluated. It's an open to the public practice/ scrimmage, no more no less.

Yeah it's a touch more because they ran almost 100 plays and the other scrimmage was around 65. Plus it's in front of 40k plus fans and on TV. The closest they will get to a real game and feel until at Miami. I think it was the first scrimmage inside the stadium as well

2024 production:
Steve Angeli: #2 QB all season and looked really good in limited action. Got way more 1st team reps & exposure than either of his two competition mates during the 2024 season. I also heard in a podcast that the locker room is his and that he's quietly the favorite amongst the team early in the spring.
CJ Carr: Fractured elbow (is he even the same talent prior to the injury?) couldn't throw for 12 weeks (during the thick of the regular season where practice reps/development is key)
Kenny Minchey: Red cap sideline signal caller

I believe the production of these players in the 2024 season is the best evidence/indicator of how the coaching staff sees the hierarchy at the position.

Has CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey ascended to new heights over the last several months in the off-season to dethrone Angeli who clearly resides at the top of the depth chart amongst the 3 at the start of spring? i'm going to need to see it to believe it.

Angeli has played in 1 bowl game and the series vs PSU. That's his only real game experience. The rest is in blowouts when we were up at least 30. What podcast? I've heard nothing to that effect.

Yes he looks the same. He was throwing dimes yesterday and threw a dime on the scrimmage the media was at last week. He's 100% healthy and has been all offseason. You don't know the injury

Minchey is much more gifted than Angeli. He would have a lot of suitors if he went portal. You're clueless here

You dont get much development during season. You don't get much reps and are doing scout team. I don't think you got 1 thing right in that whole soliliqouy lol

CJ Carr is legit. He has all the tools and skills to be QB1. The one thing that is the question mark and supersedes skill level is immaturity.
By immaturity I'm referring to not making mistakes which young QB's tend to do. Angeli has shown in his limited game experience he's capable and mature.

The ND offense was dead vs Penn State and he came in cold and gave the offense the spark they needed. He moved the ball down the field against a top rated defense.

We haven't been able to see what if any mistakes the 3 are making. How they are reading defenses, etc. because we've only seen a glimpse of their entire spring practice.

Golson5 says he's watched high school film of Carr. That means very little when you jump to a major D1 program like ND. Again Carr has the tools, and I believe will be QB1 at some point, but none of us know when that will be.

Angeli’s accuracy isn’t elite? He’s a 73% career passer and that has included meaningful snaps. You can also give Angeli the nod in decision making and ability to read a defence, as we’ve seen it at the college level.

I think everyone is jumping the gun here with Carr.

I didn't say Angelis accuracy isn't very good. But Carrs is elite. His mechanics are better and he doesn't have the long slow release as Angeli. I won't give the nod to Angeli in decision making and definitely not his ability to read a defense. From everyone that watched film and all 22s in the media, they say that is one of his weaker areas.

Carrs grandpa was LLoyd Carr. His dad was a hs coach. Cj has been getting prepared to be a QB since he was in the womb.

I think you are missing that point big time. Hes been getting top level coaching and preparing to be a qb since he was a kid

I don't think so. It's not like he just stepped on campus in January. From a pure physical ability standpoint it's easy to see in my opinion Carrs superiority over the others. By that I mean all facets, footwork, mechanics, ball handling etc. There is certainly more to playing the position than pure physical skills of course. It will play itself out. As I've said before I believe the team is good enough to reach the CFP with any of the three QBs. None of them have to be All Americans. Run the offense effectively and don't lose the game or put your defense in difficult situations.

He doesn't have much real "experience". He started 1 game and it was against a team that wasn't at full strength. And he has 1 series in the orange bowl. That's the only meaningful snaps he's taken in his career. That's really not much at all
He's played in multiple games, and meaningful games, with success. Now, you from the sidelines can down play all you want, but that's a fact. So yes, he is the most experienced; also because he's been in the program the longest. I trust the coaches to make the correct decision, certainly more than anyone on a message board who really doesn't know shit

Yeah I mentioned the games he's played in. 1 bowl game and the psu game. All the other games we were up by at least 30 and it was in the 3rd or 4th quarter. That's all the experience he has. Not very much.

He also doesn't have the most high school experience either. He only threw 321 passes and 23 tds in his entire high school career. His experience as a QB is pretty limited for a college sr.

For comparison, Carr threw around 600 attempts and around 60 tds in high school

He has the same amount of time in the Mike Denbrock offense as the other 2 so no advantage there.

I trust the coaches to make the correct decision and it's going to be CJ Carr as long as he stays healthy

It's a uphill battle for Angeli simply because the other two QBs have more years of eligibility. It sucks but it's the truth. I love Steve. Everything changed when that dude came in. We don't beat penn state without him last year.

I would flip Angeli and Minchey. Minchey was not accurate. 6-14 42.8% completion rate, whereas Carr and Angeli were 14-19 73.6%, and 8-11 72.7% respectively.
Angeli was 3rd like I said he would be. Guess I knew a little bit huh

That doesn't mean he was 3rd. You don't know sh1t. He could have been 2 and he clearly wanted to start, so he's moving on. You're an idiot.
No you are. Thought he should have e played over Leonard. Nope. Thought he was going to win the QB battle, nope

There's no way the coaches told them who was 1, 2 and 3 this soon. If they did 2 guys would transfer.

Most likely scenario and what you will here coming out is they told Carr and Minchey they were top 2 and they are going into fall camp in a battle. And they told Steve he was 3rd.

MF said he wanted it down to 2 for fall camp. Not surprised at all who the 2 are

"He's played in multiple games, and meaningful games, with success"

Angeli only played in 1 meaningful game -- the Orange Bowl. Yes, he "played" in many other games, but the outcome was never in doubt either. Yes, he did well in the Orange Bowl, but outside of that -- he, like Carr and Minchey have no starting experience at the collegiate level (yes, he started the bowl game against a non-descript, overmatched Oregon State) and played well --

When going up against an Ohio State, who gives you the better chance to win? ND has used QBs who wouldn’t throw the game away for too long. We need a difference maker at QB to close the gap versus an Ohio State, who will most likely always be a leg up at the skill positions.

Despite being an Angeli guy, I’m super excited to see what this Carr kid can do. I’m not sure about his legs, but he throws such a nice ball.
