ND staff was one of the teams that reached out to Ewers.

Every cycle? Only one top level QB can play at a time. If you are a top level QB, you aren’t wearing a visor during games.
2018 Alabama: Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts, Mac Jones, Layne Hatcher
2017 Oklahoma: Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Austin Kendall
2017 Ohio State: Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, J.T. Barrett
2012 Florida State: EJ Manuel, Jameis Winston, Jake Coker, Clint Trickett
2007 Florida: Tim Tebow, Cam Newton,
2005 USC: Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez, John David Booty
2002 USC: Carson Palmer, Matt Cassel, Matt Leinart

Yes every cycle. I know only one can play. But you need to get a top QB every year in my opinion. Let them fight it out so to speak. No job should be guaranteed. Competition brings out the best. Now, whether or not you can get top QBs every year is another story. But you need to at least try.

Some of these names on your list are not elite QB's. Mac Jones? 😂 I could go on, but I don't want you to look foolish.

Mac Jones was damn good in his time at Alabama. NFL ? Not so much. A familiar tale.

Every cycle? CFB has changed radically, and top QB’s who want to be paid well ain’t going to sit the bench.

2002? 2005? 2018? That’s ancient history. CFB has changed radically just in the last 2 years, from the transfer portal and being immediately eligible to play, to big up front money for top players.

Mac Jones was good, not elite. He had elite weapons around him that made him look better than he was. You could have plugged any QB on that team and they would have won.

It doesn’t make any sense to compare stacking talent in the past with the portal/NIL era. Kids won’t ride the bench for years when Duke, SMU, etc will throw $2M at them to transfer in.

Define elite ? He was elite enough for Bama and that's all that really matters right ?

Mac Jones was also surrounded by elite talent on offense.
His Bama offense may arguably have had more talent than the Patriots, but he still started 2 seasons in the NFL. That’s still a more accomplished career than any ND QB in how long?

I just remember Devante Smith catching a 10 yard slant and turning it into a 60 yard TD against us... he was so fast and quick

Mac Jones was an 3 star prospect out of HS and he and Tua Tagovailoa were recruited the same year. He was 3rd string behind Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa. When Hurts moved on to the NFL, Tua took over and Mac Jones was 2nd string. It was only when Tua suffered a season ending injury that Mac Jones took over. So no he wasn't considered elite by any means including Alabama. Again that team was loaded and they could have plugged anyone into that spot and had success.

Yeah so ? Like it or not the world of college athletics is my everyday business. I'll never attach a name to a source. My track record is pretty damn good when it comes to information. I'm curious, you seem to know a lot about USC. No one has ever told you anything or are you just a cross between Sherlock Holmes, Colombo and Mr. Monk ?
I love that channel. My favorite is Jim Rockford.
Just curious, when was the last “top level” ND QB?
Wimbush was highly recruited. I think Kizer too.

For the OP when a 5* two year starter might be available, we expect at least a token effort. I don't see how looking there indicates anything about the current team.

I thought the so called experts on this site said we never reached out to ewers?

I think the staff said Ewers > Angeli, so worst case would be bring in Ewers and Angeli still transfers (maybe Minchey as well).

That would have been ideal case to have Ewers as QB and Minchey/Carr battling for backup in 2025 to start in 26.

Pass on Ewers.

To be fair, you were stating they reached out during the season. According to the article, they reached out in January.

They reached out while we were still in the playoffs. It's not my inside info, it's every insider on every site was stating it.

I wonder how good Kizer would’ve been if he had stayed another year
He certainly had all the physical tools. Another year probably wouid have benefited him. Wouid ND have been better? Hard to say. But I would think they might have been better had he stayed another year

I appreciated DeShone Kizer as a QB. Adoree Jackson did not.

I guess Gunner Kiel would kind of qualify. He was a 5 star, top 25, and qb. Odd story,
Yes, Gunner Kiel was an odd story indeed. After he left ND he had to sit out a year under NCAA rules before he was allowed to play for the Cincinnati Bearcats. He threw 6 TDs in his very first game for the Bearcats and had a really good first year. Then he completely fizzled out, some of it probably because of injuries. He apparently developed a severe addiction to pain killers, and that was pretty much the end of his playing career.
