Marshall

Brian Kelly lost to Tulsa his first year at ND and went 2-3 in his first five games. There is an adjustment when you switch coaches and you have to realize we have a first year head coach. If we played Marshall yesterday we probably beat them by three touchdowns.

Who knows exactly why ND's offense was so bad the first three weeks. I personally would not put it down to poor play calling. But whatever it was, the light switch went on. That wasn't steady improvement, that was a night and day performance, and everything was working like it was old hat....

So maybe we will go back to sucking and futility in future weeks against better defenses, but what we saw yesterday looked like a playoff team, as much as any BK-coached team looked like a playoff team in these recent-past seasons, when playing a middling opponent like UNC. And we dispatched them with same ease and inevitability that any Ian Book-led tea would have. I felt like I was watching a game from 2018/19/20. Maybe even more so....

Just lost to Troy, now 2-2 with losses to Troy and Bowling Green. No going back, but man that's just a terrible loss. We are in the top 10 at 3-1.
And #3 at 4-0

If doing a what if then go all tje way. Don't concede just because they were OSU.

Estime with only 9 carries against a defense built to stop high flying speedy receivers....
They wanted no part of #7 and was already showing itself in the 2nd quarter.

Then we start running Tyree which falls right into what OSU is built to defend.

Maybe...
But styles make fights and Marshall sold out and completely was better prepared to play us.

They sat on the curl and sit routes knowing full well Rees can't help himself to call those plays.

They were correct.

Kudos to them

Isn’t that how Urban Meyer started out at Ohio State ? NO ?

You are so incredibly wrong on your assessment of Rees passing plays..

Why don’t you try to explain your flawed premise in the context of the actual passing stats.

7.8 YPA and 13.5 YPC

You know nothing about football !

There were lots of moments in that game. Lots of drops. Long balls that hit people in the face or hands. JT could have turned a pic 6 into a huge game by taking that ball as if it was his.

That was one of those games that you have to sneak by each year.....lots of teams have them.....

We just needed 1 more play somewhere...

I felt I was watching the NYGs of 1987.

It may be that Marshall and Appy State used up all of their mental energy and most of their physical in their big upsets. They are both 2-2 and not projected to win whatever conference.

What many don’t understand is the steepness of the “learning curve” that future opponents possess.

Future opponents study films and analyze, then determine their strategy for negating the other team’s offense and defense. As the season matures the data base increases.

Opponents tend to figure out what the other teams are doing and try to do their best to counter it.

Obviously talent, intellect and execution help determine outcomes, but no team possesses the secret sauce for very long.

The Marshall loss was bad, but, you learn, adjust and move on -- quit dwelling on it. Marshall came to play, and ND was still hungover from OSU (same thing happened a year ago when ND slept-walked vs Toledo after a physical, emotional game vs FSU).

That said - ND is not a top 10 team -- in its current form (3-1 or 2-2).

Even if ND beats Marshall, ND would be a top 10 on paper not in reality.

ND's offense really sucked when we played Marshall, and it underscores the panic/consternation in the fanbase, as there was no particular reason to think Marshall was going to be some formidable upstart, and sure enough they are not, they're just a random group of five team and nothing more.

And which makes Saturday's return to form such a euphoric relief, like waking up from a bad dream or something....

There was no excuse for losing to Marshall.

NONE.

It was a team failure; from the players to the coaches.

EVERYONE screwed that pooch.

BUT in the end its on Freeman for NOT having his team ready to play.

OJT for a HC means games like that.

Was BK OTJ training his first 7 years of his ND career?

How about his first year was that OTJ training? Remember south florida

No excuse then either. Failure of the Head Coach to prepare his team.
Are so rabid to defend Freeman you cannot admit he is costing us games because he simply is not ready to be a HC?

He cost us one game, maybe. And thats due to maybe trusting TRees. Nothing he really did. Hes a defensive coach, that side of the ball is playing well. You can say he put the trust in the wrong guy, maybe, we'll see

But your argument about it being OTJ training is just lazy. BK was a head coach for 20 years and cost us how many games by sticking with BVG?

If you want to say he cost us games, fine say that. The OTJ training thing is just a lazy excuse

The Marshall game exposes MF’s lack of experience. He should have know since he was hired that Marshall was a letdown no matter the outcome at OSU

DC Gene Chizik was pretty dense if he watched the 2nd half of our Cal game and didn't think we would keep running half back dives.
