Sounds like U Texas is interested in Mickens to join their staff.

Saw this last night. Didn’t give it to much consideration since Texas is offering him the safety position coach where here he’s in charge of the whole secondary. But you never know. Where there’s smoke ……..

Who knows -- maybe, deep down, he was not happy about not getting the DC spot (now, don't know if he was/was not even considered) -- he is like all of us in our professional lives -- always looking for rewards and the best opportunity to get there ..

Al golden gave him some major props saying mickens will win the Broyles award one day in the future.

I hope Mickens leaves when he accepts a defensive coordinator position elsewhere, or stays and eventually gets the defensive coordinator position at ND. Would hate to see him leave for a position coach opportunity because he was passed over for the ND defensive coordinator position.

Maybe Mickens wanted a DC role and not a "co-DC" role so is shopping around to see if he can get an independent DC job. If he doesn't find anything he comes back to ND in a "co-DC" role?

If we’re talking about the Texas job offer. Texas did not hire mickens.

Reading this makes me even more curious why Mike Mickens was not named the DC, after 5 seasons at Notre Dame working for DC’s Clark Lea, Marcus Freeman, and Al Golden.. Clark Lea certainly proved that previous experience isn't necessary to be a damn good DC, which he was.
Do you know for certain if he sought the position or not ? He and Freeman go way back together. There was certainly speculation when the position became available and he seemed like the obvious choice. Maybe he just wanted to continue to oversee his secondary. Ash will call the defense on GameDay but don't think for a minute there is not serious input from Mickens,Washington and Bullough when developing and implementing the gameplan each week. Some folks always assuming there is some sort of internal conflict.

And Notre Dame did not hire Mike Mickens as DC after 5 seasons in South Bend working for DC’s Clark Lea, Marcus Freeman, and Al Golden.
Maybe I’m incorrect. But Texas offered Mickens the safeties coach position. Not D coordinator.

You are correct. Bottom line is if he was " passed over" and unhappy as some here unknowingly suggest one would think he'd be actively seeking other employment. The guy is so highly regarded in the business that if he was known to be unhappy the opportunities would be pouring in.

Frankly, I am surprised he is not the DC at Notre Dame right now. I was certain the job was going to Mickens after Golden went to the NFL.

Why are you surprised? I acknowledge his reputation coaching and recruiting but what specifically leads you to know or believe he would make a good defensive coordinator? Tony Alford has been highly regarded for many years yet has never become an offensive coordinator. Mickens may just be very good at what he does and while I am sure he could translate this to a lesser school if he has not been offered the job at ND yet continues to coach here there is a reason.

Why? Watching Clark Lea glowingly succeed as a DC at Notre Dame with zero experience as a DC, and the fact that Mike Mickens has spent 5 seasons at Notre Dame working under DC's Clark Lea, Marcus Freeman, and Al Golden, and Micken's stellar reputation as a defensive coach, I believed Mickens had a great chance for the job.

If he indeed wanted it.

My guess is that Mickens does aspire to become a DC, but Freeman either passed him over for reasons unknown; or Mickens decided the job or time was not right. I’m just hopeful he sticks with ND until the time is right.

I have a feeling Freeman is not going to hire a coordinator without extensive experience.
