Sanders Working Harder Than Ever

CJ Sanders has been known as a hard worker, but this offseason he has taken his workouts to a new level in preparation of arriving to South Bend in June.
“Everything is going good,” Sanders told Irish Sports Daily. “I have been running track to stay in shape and lifting as well. I am enjoying the little time left with my family before I leave. All in all, I have been working harder than ever to prepare for months to come.
“I ran the 100m a little bit, but mostly the 4x100m. This year my 100m has been around 10.6 to 10.7 seconds. It’s been really about the same, but I have added some muscle weight, so it’s good I have been able to keep my speed.”
The California resident made sure to add the needed weight to get himself through his first year of Division I football and it was a decision that he set for himself.
“I am around 185 pounds right now,” stated Sanders. “Notre Dame didn’t have a set weight for me to come in at, but I wanted to add some weight to take all the hits and stuff. That was the main focus of getting my weight up. I will probably be around 185-190 when I arrive at Notre Dame in June.”
It has been well-documented that the #ShamrockSoldiers15 are extremely close and a group chat has led to the class building a strong bond with each other. That group chat is now about keeping each other motivated this offseason.
“We have the group chat, so we talk daily,” Sanders explained. “I have been keeping in touch with everyone and we are seeing everyone work out. We are keeping each other accountable, because we know what is at hand when we arrive. We are focused and ready to get around each other.
“We all have a lot of chemistry already and I don’t think we will skip a beat at all once we all finally meet. I think that is a good quality to have and it will pay off in the long run.”
With the news of Everett Golson leaving the program, Sanders is more than excited to get to work with Malik Zaire and the other Irish quarterbacks.
“I didn’t get a chance to meet Malik when I was there, but from what I have heard, he is a really great leader,” he said. “I know he is a playmaker and I can’t wait to get in touch with him. I just want to work with him towards the goal of winning a championship.”
The Notre Dame coaching staff made a quick stop by Notre Dame High School on Monday to check in and discuss where Sanders could find himself in the fall.
“Coach (Mike) Denbrock came out to the school on Monday, so I got to speak to him a little bit,” Sanders said. “It was great to see him again and to catch up. I mostly keep in contact with Coach Denbrock and Coach (Scott) Booker.
“Being in the slot is my main thing and also kick return and punt return. He also said to have my mind right and be ready to come in to contribute. My goal is to play in the slot and help in the return game.”
The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder is pretty fired up to get to South Bend next month, but he is also soaking in the time with those close to him, as he knows that won’t happen as frequently once college begins.
“I am going to kind of just relax before I get up there in a few weeks,” explained Sanders. “I will get my workouts in and things like that. I am going enjoy being with my family and friends, because I only have a month left, so I am making the most of that time. Time is flying, but I have been enjoying myself.
“I feel like I am prepared and I have been working harder than I ever have. I have make sure to put the time in to make sure I am successful. I am looking forward to it and I feel it will all pay off.”
