If we lose the game against USC do we still find a way into the playoff?

I think it's very possible we finish at the 11th or 12th spot.
Truth be told pending what happens in the top 12 this last weekend and after conference title games we very well could be back in the top 10.

If Texas loses to A&M then we are in the playoff guaranteed even if we lose to USC.

I think the only way we don't make the playoff at this point is getting embarrassed in the coliseum.
A victory we will finish as high as possible. #5
A close loss we will be around #10
Blowout loss we are not getting in.

ND getting a 5 seed is extremely remote at this point. ND needs PSU and Oregon or OSU to lose this weekend to have a shot at the 5 seed

The odds of ND getting the 6 seed is dependent on one of those 3 teams losing this weekend, or it will depend where the committee drops the loser of the OSU - Oregon BIG10 championship game.

If ND loses to USC, it may knock ND out. I wouldn't want to risk it. ND needs to go out and win.

The loser of Oregon-Ohio State IMO is the 5 seed.

And if Penn State beats Maryland, IMO they are the 6.

I see Notre Dame possibly at 11 or 12 if they lose at USC.

We will be a 5 thru 8 seed with a win. 5 and 8 least likely. 6 or 7 is most likely landing spot.

With a loss ot will be close

If we win on Saturday in dominant fashion #5 is lock.
Why?
Comparable. PSU barely escaped Los Angeles with a win. If we dominate we will be seeded higher than them.
Write that down.

no matter how you slice it...we will get #5 if we win.
If OSU loses against Michigan...
OSU won't be seeded higher than us plus their BIG title game is gone.

If Oregon decimates PSU, which could happen, both PSU and OSU are behind us.

If we win in the coliseum we are #5.

If we lose we might still be in.
ND has eyes. Eyes are rating$!!!

Another scenario....

We lose to USC im a close one but...
BUT..
A&M also beats Texas then has a good showing against Georgia.

So much football left and what if's....

I dont think they get in with a loss. If by some miracle they do, I think the morale they have been riding on woukd be wiped out!
Maybe...but...styles make fights like in boxing.
Never know who that first round matchup would be against and might favor. Win one and momentum is back.

I've noted that an increasing number of non-ND-affiliated members of the PODCAST COMMENTARIAT are saying that there's a chance ND can do it depending on what happens elsewhere. The latter stipulation is of course OBVIOUS, though it was NOWHERE TO BE FOUND even a couple of weeks ago.

A DYNAMIC SITUATION is characterized by constant change. And that's exactly what this kind of playoff selection process IS.

I think we jump PSU, IF we win convincingly at USC....Call it like 35-24........They will take H-H, USC V PSU...OT.....just my opinion.

My 1st instinct is: no, ND won't make the playoffs with 2 losses...maybe if a loss was tight with both teams playing lights out?

Losing to NIU and a relatively weak schedule is enough to demand ND beat USC. In what is effectively a playoff game. Seems a reasonable ask.

Again, losing to NIU is that exceptional. It's not one of those nebulous quality losses. ND has to beat USC, taking care of business.

This is exactly the situation a great coach sees through. As I posted before, I actually won't blame MF if ND should lose...if they play an A game, but lose due to bad luck and an improbable great USC performance.

Such a worst case scenario wouldn't change the longer term positive trending for MF and ND. But, let's bring this home. Come on Fighting Irish!

It's possible but unlikely. One thing that would help (and again there are a lot of factors and a positive confluence is a longish shot) is a good Gtech performance tonight. Go ramblin wreck. GT is trending up and UGA is inconsistent, Haynes King is back, tech is healthier, and it is a rivalry game, unfortunately it's in Athens and Georgia is Georgia. But keep an eye on that one.

There is a small chance we could get in but if we lose to USC we probably don't deserve to. Just keep the momentum going and we could get a favorable first round game.
Come on<, it's impossible for ND to get a first round bye. First round byes only go to conference champs.

Yeah, I'd say so. If UGA keeps losing to GTech, hell yeah we get in at 10-2.

What would suck is if we did lose, knock on wood that we don't, another SEC team went down, like Tenn to Vandy, and then three ACC teams got in over us. I guess that would be Clemson, Miami and SMU. That would definitely validate the ACC, if nothing else. We didn't play any of those teams. You know what, I don't even think that makes sense. If UGA ends up losing, I think we're in at 10-2. As long as we keep it close. Even though we're definitely going to kick USC's ass.

This is a good hypothetical discussion. We've all been in sports. So in situations like this, the team focuses on controlling its destiny, not loss hypotheticals.

Fun for us as funs to rant and rave about. But I too hope MF is focused on everything to win today, totally ignoring considering 10-2. I believe today is the biggest day yet of his entire coaching career.

He has 1 mission he will be judged on: can he get the Fighting Irish to play its A game?

I'm counting on it!

What a waste that was last night, GT absolutely had that game won. That really was an incredible choke job. Incredible 8 OT finish, but they were up by two TDs with five minutes to go, and obviously it shouldn't have ever reached that stage. In any case, that luxury I was anticipating, and which appeared in hand didn't actually come to pass. So now it's win or die again.
