BK Back at ND

Right, he’s a peach. Beloved. Look, I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t like BK. He was a major upgrade. MF is a big risk. While he’s already proving we are going to be good based on his recruiting prowess, he was a big risk based on lack of experience. BK is a good program builder. I just know he’s a dink. Perhaps it’s because MF is so much more likable that people are hating on BK. Had we hired Fickell, I don’t know if people would be talking as much about BK.
Which raises the question:

What’s more important winning or being likable ?

It would be nice to have both, but given the choice, what do you choose ?

No I totally am. I don't know where you're getting that from. Because I don't identify with fans like you? Come on now... But you keep groveling. That's really all you guys are good for. Just wallowing in the filth, and rolling in that dirt....

I got an idea, why don't you go hit up some of the players? Seriously, make a little youtube video. And you can get yourself a microphone and stick it in their face and put them on the spot. Ask them about BK and see what happens. Take it to the next level.....
I am getting it from you... you said, and I quote;

"ND fans are complete trash. You guys don't enter in the equation. You're squatters is all you really are."

"ND's trash fanbase."

"what a horror show the ND program has become"

"ND's toxic fans don't mean shit to anyone. You're just a burden, nothing more....."

I'm not sure how you are "identifying" me. You like to make a lot of accusations, assumptions and generalizations. I haven't grovelled about anything. I do not have a problem with BK. I don't have a problem with him leaving... people in business do it all of the time. He was at ND for a long time, and if he wanted a different challenge, or LSU offered more money, good for him. I was very realistic about where ND was before and now after Kelly. He had them as a consistently Top 5 team the last 10 years. I also realize the gap between the Top 4 and then ND was wide. In fact, any other team that has been in the playoffs and played the eventually champ has been blown out just like ND, saved the one time Okla played Bama pretty well in the Semis. DO I want ND to add another title, yes... but I appreciate where BK had ND, while still wanting more.

So again, you disparaged ND program and ALL it's fans, while seemingly separating yourself out of the lump. So I simply asked if you were not a fan... no little youtube video needed.

It has nothing to do with being a good coach or not. It's did the players like him
Yeah- I guess I was surprised that even in a situation where the team was great, the roster was still apparently littered with guys who didn't like BK.

Then when I thought more about it, I reminded myself: former players are, more times than not, pissed off at the former coach. I’ve seen it and heard it a thousand times. For a litany of reasons, former players often bitch and complain about the HC. Especially on a football team, where you’ve got 70 or so guys….it’s not hard to find guys who are willing to be vocal about a perceived negative experience or relationship.

I said that I was done debating/talking about BK……yet, here I am. Again 🙃.

I don't mean all of them of course. But a lot. A whole lot of online ND fans are trash. And the shoe fits well enough. So my sincerest condolences if you took particular offense....

And please spare us both the unnecessary self-justification. I really don't give a shit. If you really appreciate BK so much like you say you do, then start showing it, like, all the time.....

Good for you. Everyone I know that played for him at GVSU thinks he’s a tool.
The kids are actually in the worst position to evaluate the adults. It's like those evaluations you fill out on the teacher at the end of class. How to compare him to all the other calculus professors? oh right; I have only had one. Bobby Knight was defended by some of his players.

The best teachers are loved by students. They can demand more. College football head coach might be different. Idk. But in my experience if you love your coach you work harder and will put up with more.

When you say that “a whole lot of online ND fans are trash”, could you quantify that for me ?

What’s the size of the sampling pool, how many online ND fans are in that pool and how many are trash ?

Thanks

Maybe the love comes retrospectively.

I always found self motivation to be my driving force rather than a coach or teacher, irrespective of my feelings about them

I’ve always thought that you’re best motivated: internally, and then externally by your teammates (often also some of your best friends). Kids have to realize, and most eventually do, that: every coach, at any level is 1 phone call away from leaving them high and dry for a better opportunity.

The whole “we play hard for coach” thing only has so much reach.

Some coaches are simply great motivators in the moment. IMO, BK wasn’t great at that. But the guy could certainly run a program.

The friendliest teachers are the most popular. That doesn't mean they are the best at making the student learn the material

Not in good districts. AP teachers in my kids district are the popular teachers. Depends on the kid you’re referring to.

Best coach I ever had holds about 9 state championships. He was scary as hell, but he knew everything about his athletes lives. He let kids live with him when they fell on hard times. Everyone loved and feared him. He loved his guys. He demanded a level of work that nobody matched and succeeded because he was loved and feared. You were more scared of disappointing him than your own parents. It was a damn cult and he tested and pushed kids in ways that would make some people shake their heads. IDK if Freeman is that kind of coach, but he seems more on that spectrum than BK.

Did Kelly ever finish building that mansion next to rocknes home? Did they sell it ?

?

My daughter lives a block from Rockne's old house ... no new construction has been going on in the area for the past 11 years.

I thought Kelly, like Weis and Davie, lived out in Granger. Rockne lived in South Bend just about a mile south of Notre Dame.

My top two Professors were night and day. The best one held class like he was a guest on lounge chairs on the back lawn. The 2nd best thought The Paper Chase was an instruction manual; in that movie the Prof is calling on his students to embarrass them for ignorance. Being likable is a nice bonus but it doesn't make or break a great leader.

BK or not to BK. Very personal to most of us. I thought he was an exceptional coach but always had a slime factor to him. Couldn’t tell if that was just part of being a big time coach, Dabo and Saban and Jimbo have that something as well. Less Dabo.

The way he handled ND, no love lost here. I’m glad his daughter graduate and it’s great he came back to see it. I’m sure he couldn’t wait to get his police escort and leave. I wish him no harm or ill will.

He left ND better in so many ways but in the end showed his backside. So he moved on, I moved on. He is just a coach than never won a NT at ND so he will never have a statue and he will never be talked about as one of the best here.

So good luck to BK, he will go down in the history books as one of the best coaches Grand Valley State has ever had.

Whatever you guys need to say to get it out of your system, and I guess feel like you're keeping your dignity intact. If the end result is that you can STFU about it in the future, I suppose that could suffice. The notion that any of you guys are actually going to do the guy the justice he deserves is of course a pipe dream....

The problem is that some of you guys are so effed up with BK insanity, and too often you just can't stop saying nonsensical shit about the football team, and the program, almost like on a technical level. Straight up fantasy-world, and often conspiratorial gibberish and made-up lies, where we start getting into the realm of big-lie/magical thinking/stop the steal type talk.

So you gotta stop with that too..... Not just with the name-calling and corny derision and mockery. But with the baseless and false, more defamatory claims and portrayals that he's some shitty, overrated coach, on a more substantive level. I would take it as far as even dropping semi-benign comments like 'it was time for a change', or 'he had reached his peak', because even an assertion such as that is baseless, with virtually no substance supporting it, even just as a so-called 'opinion'.... Because if anything the opposite is true. The program was ready to make a serious title run over these next few seasons, had BK stayed. And now MF gets to enjoy, and have handed to him, all the benefits of our rise to to the top of the CFB ladder, even though there's a very good chance he will bungle the whole thing up. Which is fine, he's a rookie coach, at ND, and there's no shame in not being able to match someone like BK....

Anyways, thanks, I guess, for these rather lame, rather trite expressions of watered-down, grudging, snickering acknowledgement of BK's awesomeness, along with the requisite accompanying self-serving petty putdowns and inane criticisms to offset them, lest you lose any face with the boys on the internet.... which is really all this was ever about I suppose. You have a few unhinged psychos constantly beating the drum of how awful BK is, like straight-up mentally ill lunatics. And eventually the rest of the sad sacks simply can't resist. Sticking up for BK gets to be regarded as a beta male position to take, and before long like a bunch of frantic hyenas, you got the bulk of, or at least a nice, large critical mass of the fans, and of the tribe.... worked into a primitive, hormonal frenzy over who's gonna hate on BK the most or the loudest. And that's all she wrote, and woe betide anyone who defies the tribe, which is definitely the idea to start with and is no accident. And which is pretty much the story of toxic masculinity in the history of the human race.... Certainly one of its more horrifying, destructive manifestations.....

If there is any person on this board that needs to STFU about Brian Kelly, it is YOU. You are in love with the guy. We get that. In spades. But the constant insults and condescending remarks you fire off at anyone who states a remotely negative thing about Kelly has become predictable, old and tired. Your unhinged defense of Kelly has gone from obsessive to delusional. Your are utterly incapable of seeing why others take a more nuanced view of the man. Come back when you have something intelligent and mature to say on the subject. Until then, try taking your own advice and STFU.

BK won nothing of significance. Zero major bowl wins, an atrocious record vs top 10, blow out losses in the playoffs and major bowl games and zero national championships.

If that's what you look up to and idolize, I feel sorry for you because you have a loser mindset, and clearly don't know what winning actually is. You are the joke of this forum, it's pathetic.

We should all hope Freeman can win as much as BK.

No. We should hope he wins more. And wins some big games. Why would we hope for the same. Thats a loser mentality
I don't worry about things I can't control. I will be happy if he wins 2/3 of the games BK did.

So basically you are hoping he and Notre Dame fails.

The problem is BK set several new standards at ND, beginning with recruiting, not winning any games vs the elites, major bowl games or a championship. Some of the fan base have been lulled into enjoying 10 win seasons only to get humiliated against comparable or better competition.

I hope Freeman can turn that page. I’m always afraid of going backwards like we have seen.
You know Gerry Faust was one hell of a recruiter but sucked as a head coach. The one thing MF has over Faust and Weis is he has been coach college kids for sometime now and he has been at ND for a year plus now. I am always leery on first time head coaches but I am very optimistic about MF.

Yeah, I saw that, and thought it unlikely there would be a lot big enough to build a modern mansion in Rockne's old neighborhood. I know Rockne lived south of the university, but what street was it on?

East Wayne. The area between Eddy St and Greenlawn is now part of a historic district. Don't see any new buildings popping up in that area any time soon.

Yes, some of the houses have undergone some renovation ... made larger ... but they've followed the original appearance of the house very well.

Kelly was in a big house in Granger on a 1+ acre lot but was building a new house in SB…was told on Vincent Street FWIW

Vincent Street? You mean Saint Vincent Street? Thats close to the university, but the other houses along that street are meh. Wouldn't be worth building a mansion there ... it would lose value as soon as it was built.

In my opinion, the nicest areas in SB are the Jefferson St corridor (2 or 3 streets north and south of Jefferson) between Eddy and Ironwood, and the area around Twyckenham down near Erskine Park Golf course.
