HKY: Irish sweep Mercyhurst with shutout by Ryan Bischel

Notre Dame hockey didn't need to fight back from a deficit on Saturday.

The Irish, who completed a comeback victory in overtime on Thursday, never trailed in the back half of a two-game series with Mercyhurst. That's because graduate senior goaltender Ryan Bischel blanked the Lakers in a 5-0 win at Compton Family Ice Arena on Friday night.

Notre Dame (4-3) only needed 37 shots to score five goals. Mercyhurst (0-5) couldn't get any of its 33 shots past Bischel.

The Irish started the scoring with a power-play goal by defenseman Drew Bavaro with 10:30 remaining in the first period. Fellow defenseman Paul Fischer extended the lead to 2-0 with a even-strength goal with 3:11 remaining in the first period.

Forward Landon Slaggert scored the next two goals in the third period to put the game out of reach. Slaggert, a senior, scored two goals on Friday night and extended his season tally to seven.

Freshman forward Brennan Ali finished the Irish scoring with his first career goal, an empty netter with 29 seconds remaining.

Notre Dame will start Big Ten conference play next week with a two-game series at No. 15 Penn State (4-1) on Friday and Saturday.

Basketball MBB: See 2025 four-star PF target Trent Sisley on visit with Micah Shrewsberry

Notre Dame men’s basketball is currently hosting 2025 power forward Trent Sisley on an unofficial visit.

Sisley is a priority target for the Irish. The Santa Claus (Ind.) Heritage Hills junior is a four-star prospect and the No. 49 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-7, 200-pound recruit visited the Irish in June. He detailed that visit with Inside ND Sports here. I also watched him play in June and caught up with him there.

Recruiting Rising 2025 OL Jack Lange previews upcoming Notre Dame visit

Following its bye week, Notre Dame football is set to compete at home vs. Pittsburgh which gives the Irish an opportunity to host their fifth recruiting weekend of the season.

The coaching staff is expected to welcome six 2024 commits and four 2025 targets on Saturday. For the full breakdown, check out the visitors preview and our running visitors list thread.

I caught up with Notre Dame 2025 offensive line prospect Jack Lange ahead of his trip. He is 6-foot-8, 275 pounds and has nine total offers from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska and Vanderbilt. He is not currently rated or ranked.

Lange attends Eureka (Mo.) High and is friends with 2025 four-star running back commit Justin Thurman, who used to live in Missouri before moving to Tampa (Fla.).

His contact with Notre Dame has been with recruiting analyst Dre Brown. This will be Lange's first Notre Dame game.

"I’m super pumped to see the offensive line up close so I can see what they do and I will try to implement it into my game," Lange told Inside ND Sports. "I know how prestigious Notre Dame is and how deep their history is rooted."

Lange's latest offer came from Vanderbilt on Thursday. We saw the Irish extend an offer to 2025 four-star tight end Linkon Cure during his visit earlier this month for the USC game. Depending on what offensive line coach Joe Rudolph thinks of Lange, he could be added to the 2025 board that currently consists of targets Owen Strebig, Matty Augustine, Easton Ware, Will Black and Michael Roeske.

"An offer from Notre Dame would mean everything," Lange said. "My dad has been a lifelong Notre Dame fan and it has rubbed off on me in a way. I also value my academics and want to get a degree in the long run and I know I can get one there."

Recruiting 2025 DT Nic Moore ready to visit Notre Dame, catch up with coaching staff

Notre Dame football is scheduled to have commits, targets and prospects ranging from the 2024 recruiting class to the 2027 class in attendance on Saturday for its game against Pittsburgh. Inside ND Sports published our visitors preview on Friday. The running visitors list thread is also fully updated.

One visitor expected on Saturday is 2025 defensive tackle prospect Nic Moore, who I spoke with on Thursday.

The three-star recruit camped at Notre Dame in June for Irish Invasion and attends Dandridge (Tenn.) Jefferson County. He is the No. 28 overall player in Tennessee for the 2025 class and has seven total offers from Eastern Kentucky, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Ole Miss, New Mexico State, South Florida and Wake Forest.

This season, Moore has visited Auburn, Duke and Virginia Tech.

On his excitement for Saturday:

"Coach Washington said, 'This won't be the last time you're up here,'" Moore said about their last interaction in June. "I've just been waiting until I could get back up there and here I am this week weekend. I'm excited."

On watching Howard Cross III and the defensive line:

"I'm probably going to be paying attention closest to defensive lines' hands and their ability to read and redirect, because as a defensive lineman, being able to redirect and read with things like play actions and pitches is one of the most important things to make explosive plays on the line of scrimmage."

The defensive tackle position is one I'm watching closely. 2024 three-star DT commit Sean Sevillano Jr is expected to sign with the Irish in December. Besides Sevillano, Washington only has 2025 four-star DT Davion Dixon committed in the 2025 class even though 2025 defensive end Joseph Reiff might slide inside at the collegiate level. The Irish are also working to flip Georgia 2024 three-star DT commit Nnamdi Ogboko.

HKY: Landon Slaggert helps Irish rally past Mercyhurst in OT

Senior Landon Slaggart's second goal of the night and fifth of the season gave Notre Dame a 4-3 overtime hockey win Thursday night at Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend. The Irish (3-3) rallied from a two-goal, third-period deficit on goals by Tyler Carpenter and Trevor Janicke.

Ryan Siedem and Justin Janicke assisted on Slaggert's game-winner. Ryan Bischel collected 24 saves for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame outshot Mercyhurst (0-2-2) by a 54-27 count. The 54 shots were the most in a game by the Irish since firing off 78 in a 4-3 loss to UMass in five overtimes on March 6, 2015. That Hockey East conference playoff game is the longest is college hockey history.

ND and Mercyhurst close the two-game series Friday night at 7:35 p.m.

Recruiting Revisiting current FutureCasts

With another recruiting weekend on deck for Notre Dame football, I thought it would be a good time to review the FutureCasts I’ve made for recruits who have yet to make decisions.

Here’s a link to my FutureCasts profile if you want to check out my previous predictions or check back for new ones in the future. I took over the lead role in FutureCast prediction for Inside ND Sports earlier this year, so my track record doesn’t predate that. But I’ll always post about my Notre Dame predictions on The Insider Lounge before I submit one publicly.

I currently have four FutureCast predictions in favor of Notre Dame for uncommitted 2025 recruits.

CB Cree Thomas

Confidence level: 9. Thomas may return to Notre Dame this weekend after attending the USC game two weeks ago. I liked Notre Dame’s chances then, and I still do now.

WR Jerome Bettis Jr.

Confidence level: 8. There hasn’t really been any other team emerge as an obvious threat to Notre Dame in his recruitment. Bettis Jr. has been a frequent visitor at ND games this season.

S Ethan Long

Confidence level: 7. Penn State and Ohio State are fighting to catch up with Notre Dame here, but I still think Notre Dame’s out front for Long.

OL Owen Strebig

Confidence level: 7. USC wants to try to pull off the upset here. And he’s expected to visit the Trojans in November for the UCLA game. But I still think the pull to Notre Dame is too strong to expect him anywhere else at this point.
