Pete Sampson in The Athletic tonight had a lengthy article about what all Ian Book and Notre Dame has accomplished so far this season. He pointed out that ND has potentially 3 more games left and how a National Championship would cap off a truly remarkable season.

He then addressed the fact that if ND were to win the National Championship during this pandemic season there undoubtedly would be an asterisk attached to it. Sampson then wrote a couple of great paragraphs about what such an asterisk would really mean:

Win twice beyond the ACC championship game, and this team may be remembered as one of Notre Dame’s greatest, playing through a pandemic and clearing every hurdle in its way.

A national championship in this season of coronavirus testing, canceled games and incomplete seasons would come with an asterisk, no doubt. But that asterisk would mark the champion as having persevered during the most difficult circumstances. It would multiply the significance of the achievement, not diminish it.
